Lyme disease is caused by the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted to animals through the bite of an infected tick. Although most dogs exposed to Lyme disease do not become sick, those that do often do not show symptoms until 2-5 months after a tick bite. Some dogs with Lyme disease may develop a type of kidney disease called Lyme nephritis, which can lead to: edema, weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, and can be deadly.
