The Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota (AERC) was established in 1980 by a group of veterinarians who wanted to provide their clients with quality veterinary care during non-business hours. Animal Emergency & Referral Center started out with one clinic, one veterinarian, and one technician! Over the years, our hospitals have grown, and we highly value the relationships we’ve built wit

h local veterinarians, pets and owners in the many communities we serve. Today, we employ a wide variety of doctors and health care team members – all specially trained in emergency and critical care--in addition to a growing referral practice for when your pet just isn't feeling like himself. Though we are an emergency practice and will never forget our roots, we are forging a future as the premier referral center in Minnesota. Critical Care, Internal Medicine (including our I-131 Treatment Facility for Hyperthyroid Cats,) Surgery & Rehab, Cardiology, Cancer Care, Dentistry & Oral Surgery, Dermatology, Neurology and Radiology are just some of the services your pets can receive when needed.

Meet Pete! A few months ago, a tiny 2-pound kitten came to Tuff Start Rescue with some BIG medical issues. The most serious of Pete's conditions is a liver shunt - which is a blood vessel that bypasses fresh blow flow through the livers, and instead carries blood around the liver. Common symptoms include neurologic problems like seizures and disorientation. Thanks to Tuff Start Rescue, Pete had liver shunt surgery right here at AERC! Tuff Start Rescue says Pete's been doing great and is quite the hilarious & active kitty!

Your support can ensure that more animals like Pete receive the care they need. By donating to Tuff Start Rescue, you're helping . 🐶🐱 No contribution is too small—together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of these "lemons"! ❤️‍🩹🍋

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day. ❤️🖤💚

This day commemorates June 19, 1865 when the last enslaved people were freed in Galveston, Texas as Union soldiers enforced the Emancipation Proclamation (which was issued by Lincoln on January 1, 1863 prior to the end of the Civil War in April of 1865). 250,000 people were freed that day.

There are a number of Juneteenth celebrations today throughout Minnesota. Please feel free to share any local events in the comments! You can also view a list of events here: https://www.minneapolis.org/calendar/holidays/juneteenth/

Higher than 80°F outside? ☀️ If yes – DO NOT heavily exercise your dogs outside! A walk in the cooler hours of the day is fine or a slow meander when it’s hot.

If your pet is at an increased risk of overheating, it’s especially important to monitor them closely while outside on humid days.

Passionate Care. Meaningful Relationships.

The Animal Emergency & Referral Center of Minnesota (AERC) was established over 35 years ago by a group of veterinarians who wanted to provide their clients with quality veterinary care during non-business hours. Today, we employ a wide variety of veterinarians, board-certified specialists, and health care team members, all on-hand for when your pet just isn't feeling like himself. We’re proud to be the only locally-owned emergency and specialty hospital for pets in the state of Minnesota.

Having a sick or injured pet is stressful. We understand. Every doctor and every staff member here is a pet owner. Trust us to keep you informed about the care your pet receives at our center and to pay special attention to your needs as well. We promise to treat you and your pet with kindness, dignity, and respect.

In addition to providing good, old fashioned tender loving care, we’ve got your pet’s medical needs covered. Whether your pet has sustained traumatic injury, has a chronic illness, or is just not feeling well, we have the expertise and the technology for speedy diagnosis and quality care.
