Viscose and all of its aliases (bamboo silk, banana silk, manmade silk, Tencel, rayon) - they all are chemically processed wood and plant pulp. Essentially a high gloss paper... on your floor.

Well, not on YOUR floor if you are a professional cleaner, because you know better. But on many consumers' floors. Mostly because, they do not realize it is paper. They think they bought silk because... well... when you pay thousands of dollars for a rug, it must be high quality, right?

There are times when viscose rugs can be saved from simple spills and regular soiling, and times when they cannot. There are times it is worth your talents and labor to get the rug better, and times when the rug owner's money would be better spent on another rug. Perhaps one that is not made from paper.

On the upcoming program for The Experience Convention and Trade Show (September 18-20), one of the sessions I am teaching is one all about viscose. How to handle it, how to maintain it, and how to handle the conversations when you have to be the one to explain why a plain water spill may have ruined your new viscose rug.
