WildCareOklahoma needs newspapers! We're completely out of newspapers, and it's a busy time of the year. We use newspaper to line cages, and we change these daily (and more often depending on the patient). We can't use the slick/shiny print paper used for many ads.

You can bring them to the center anytime between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. any day of the week - we're open 365 days a year!

Thank you for providing this resource for our wildlife patients!

Today is a day we take pause to reflect and honor those who have paid the most.

"In the summer of 2009, SPC Brandon K. Steffey came into the Army Vet clinic on Bagram Air Force Base, where I was deployed. He was exhausted and was bringing his Military Working Dog (MWD) Maci in for heat injury after they had been searching for Bowe Bergdahl; both recovered. Maci was a combat tracker. We saw each other for training and kennel inspections. They worked hard and worked often. October 25, 2009, they were KIA. I am sad that they are gone and blessed that they came into my life.
Thank you SPC Steffey and Maci and all of our fallen heroes, we honor your sacrifice."
-- LTC Shara Carlton

To Steffey, Maci, their families, and all of our fallen heroes, we thank you.

As the weather gets warmer and temperatures rise lets talk about Heat Stroke
It only takes a short period of time for an animal left in a car to get into a deadly situation.
Dogs don’t sweat to regulate their body temperatures (normally 100.0°F – 102.5°F).
They release heat through their tongue, nose and foot pads. Dogs pant to exchange
cooler outside air with the warm humid air in their lungs while cats don’t usually pant until
they are overwhelmed by the heat. If the outside air isn’t cooler than an animal’s body
temperature, the animal can succumb to Heat Stroke. Without prompt attention, Heat
Stroke can result in brain damage, kidney failure, cardiac arrest and death. Older and
overweight pets as well as short-nosed breeds are at the greatest risk.
Symptoms of Heat Stroke include:
· heavy panting
· gasping
· vomiting (if not yet dehydrated)
· foam around the mouth
· weak or high pulse
· inability to drink
· bright red or suddenly bluish gums
· loss of consciousness

An Oklahoma Wildlife Alert from the OKC Zoo and WildCareOklahoma: May is mating season for Oklahoma’s turtles! Dozens of different species of turtles native to Oklahoma can be seen wandering long distances from their native habitats in search of food and a mate. If you see a tortoise crossing a road, please do not hit them! If you want to help a turtle cross the road, FIRST, make sure you are safe then carefully pick up the turtle, placing it on the opposite side of the road in the direction they were facing. Always take them across the road in the same direction that they were headed. To learn more about WildCare visit www.wildcareoklahoma.org
