It seems to be a trend lately for people to go online and do a Google search or look in Axolotl groups for info on how to keep axolotls. Believing every fact they find like it’s gospel. While that is a great start please, PLEASE speak to reputable breeders and double check your sources. You might be taking information from someone who doesn’t really know how to care for this animal as a good source, when it’s not.
Just for fun I did a quick Google search on Axolotl care facts and there is so much misinformation out there. Just a few false facts listed below which were put online as accurate info (it’s NOT)
Example 1: Axolotls are salt water animals (false)
Example 2: They need temps 80-90° because they come from Mexico where the climate is warm. (False mixed with enough fact to seem believable)
Example 3: They make amazing parents and lovingly raise their young. (🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ So false it’s laughable)

Then there are the tank requirements which seem to change on who you talk to. And honestly there is no cookie cutter correct answer to this. There are so many factors and one size does not fit all. You MUST use common sense and some critical thinking skills.
Things that can affect the tank size needed:
1: How big is your Axolotl? 1 inch? 14 inches? If you put a 1 inch Axolotl in a huge tank most likely it will die. It will spend so much energy looking for its food that it will not have enough nutrients left to grow. On the flip side if you put a large Axolotl in a tiny tank or bin it will not have enough room to keep its body condition toned. It will also produce too much waste for that small volume of water. When I recommend 10-20 gallon tanks to people it’s because I know my lines. I know the size of the Axolotl that I am selling. I have experience. A 4 inch baby does NOT need a 30-40 gallon tank. My lines run towards 9-12 inches full grown. I do not produce giant Axolotls 😆
2: What type of filtration are you using? Is the tank cycled? You cannot use a powerful filter made for a 75 gallon tank on a 10 gallon tank and think that will be good for your axolotl. Just like you cannot use a filter made for a 10 gallon in a much larger tank and think it will be sufficient. A filter with the water fall feature and a small hole in the uptake pipe might be perfectly suitable in a larger tank with an adult Axolotl and yet be dangerous if your Axolotl is small enough to get sucked up against or even into the intake. If the tank is smaller then the water fall feature might make the water flow too active which will stress out an Axolotl if it cannot get away, yet be perfectly ok in a different set up. You MUST use common sense. Understand your animals needs and meet them.
3: Water quality and what affects it needs to be addressed. I cannot tell you how often to do water changes because there are so many factors that affect your water quality. Is your tank cycled? Is your filtration appropriate and adequate? How many inches of Axolotl do you have per gallon? Is it planted with real plants? What are you feeding, how much, and is any left over left in the tank to rot? What temperature does your tank sit at? A higher temp means you will need to do more water changes. Over feeding and feeding dead food (frozen blood worms/pellets) will mean you need to do more water changes. Having a smaller Axolotl to water gallon ratio will mean you need more water changes. Obviously the reverse is true as well, the more gallons you have per inch of Axolotl will dilute the waste more and mean you will need less water changes. Also when you do the water change you will be replacing a larger volume in a big tank vs a small tank. Insufficient filtration or even the cycle crashing will mean more water changes.

Ways to reduce the amount of water changes needed is pretty simple when you stop and think about it. Most important is having the tank cycle. Then having appropriate filtration and water temperature. Lower temps lower the Axolotls metablism and reduces waste production to a degree. Having live plants will help as well. Feeding live food will help reduce waste from the left over food rotting. And even though pellets are easier I’ve found that when I feed pellets I have to clean a lot more and do a deeper clean. And honestly the number one way to reduce the amount of water changes needed is to just have a larger tank. 10-20 gallons is perfectly suitable if you can maintain it and keep it clean. But if you have trouble maintaining your parameters go bigger. A larger tank is more stable just because of the larger water volume. And of course I mean this with sub adults and adults. It is my experienced opinion that small babies don’t do well in large tanks. And I’ve raised 100s of them.
