IF YOU’VE TOURED Pennsylvania or visited historical sites in Philadelphia, you’ve likely seen those iconic blue roadside markers honoring people, places and events of local, regional or national historical significance. After studying the history of Sanctuary Farm’s neighborhood, our Community Scholars have identified four noteworthy Sharswood and Brewerytown persons and organizations who they (and we) believe are worthy of markers: Coach Dawn Staley, the late Hank Gathers, the late Cecil B Moore and Project HOME. Wouldn’t it be awesome if the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s Historical & Museum Commission approved and created historical markers to honor these distinguished individuals and organization? PHMC plans to reopen the Historical Marker Program for new nominations in 2025. Let’s make them a reality!

WELCOME Community Scholars! This is the second year for the program, bringing together students from Malvern Prep with students from the community for two weeks to work and learn alongside one another about neighborhood history, food inequity, climate change in urban areas, and much more.

Today’s focus for the scholars was the history of the neighborhood around the farm. We started to explore the history of the area through historical markers, street names, and names on public buildings. We also began to ask how the history of the neighborhood around the farm fits into the larger story of under resourced areas in our society.

State Senator Sharif Street kicked off the Scholars program by talking to students about the importance of urban agricultural to address environmental, social, and health related concerns. He also saw urban agriculture as a profitable undertaking for young entrepreneurs. Thank you for joining us, Senator Street!

Last Saturday, Sanctuary Farm was proud to be represented at the Mass Poor People’s & Low-Wage Workers’ Assembly in Washington, DC. Under the leadership of the Rev. Dr. William Barber II and the sponsorship of the Poor People’s Campaign, our farmers Carolyn, Dan, David and Jan joined people from every corner of the country to demand that those in power hear the voices of poor and low-wage voters and other impacted people. Recognizing that poverty is the 4th leading cause of death in the US, resulting in more than 800 deaths daily, this movement seeks to mobilize 15 million poor and low-wage, infrequent voters ahead of this year’s pivotal elections. These voters and their allies could be the swing votes in key local, state and national elections. This movement is aligned with ours: to address inequities resulting from systemic racial oppression and economic injustice. Stay tuned as we develop voter education, registration and mobilization efforts in the coming months.
