Who wants this sweet dog?

FINN is an energetic and inquisitive 15-month-old, 45-pound, Terrier mix male who needs a new home. The adopter is disabled and can no longer care for him. He is leash trained; he likes to play with his chew toys, will fetch, and currently gets his exercise in the yard. He is in good health, neutered, up to date on shots, and has a microchip. He is housebroken and will ask to go out. Finn is good with other dogs; children and cats are unknown. He knows commands sit, no, leave it, treat, and out. He will love having attention and learning how to be your best friend. There is no adoption fee for this friendly boy.
If you will welcome Finn into a loving home as part of your family, please call Alan any time at 510-593-5004.

Although I’ve never done it, my favorite sport is cutting. Even the warmup looks like a ballet! Closest I ever got to cutting was doing team penning back in the ‘80s on Chino Bob whose granddaddy was Doc Bar on both sides! Watch it!

My bordoodle Mocha is now ready to seriously start training as a service dog. So proud of her (and The Complete Canine trainer Kari) for all the work she’s done helping us pass the CGC (Canine Good Citizenship test, a prerequisite for a SDIT, or Service Dog in Training).

Over Veterans Day weekend, I hosted a Horse Camping 101 clinic for the Tucson Saddle Club with the help of NATRC champion Sherry Bray in Sonoita’s Fish Canyon area. Here’s the review of it in our newsletter.

My latest Airbnb review from this morning!
“Laura is the really best teacher I could ask for learning riding a horse! I had booked other equine experience but none compares to Laura's. Her two hour session is so well planned and carried out. Laura taught every skill that she listed in the description with great clarity, she shows you how to do everything and then let you do it. For everything that she teaches, she shares the best safe way to do it. Throughout the course I can feel her care to humans and horses! BTW Mosaic is a very gentle and friendly horse, that made me feel more comfortable and confident in riding. Overall, def 5 star experience!”

Had a great Thanksgiving with my besties from Flagstaff who came to visit this weekend. Rode Thursday morning at Tucson Mountain Stables (where I work), had a SCRUMPTIOUS dinner with recipes I have from White Stallion (dude ranch) kitchen of calabacitas, my Nana’s Italian stuffing, sweet potatoes, and cranberry relish followed by a campfire and bourbon pecan pie. I actually got a GOOD tequila (Hornitos Reservado) and made prickly pear margaritas with a splash of mango juice (YUM). On Friday we went to Tombstone, and unfortunately they need to leave later today after we go to a cowboy market this morning. So glad to have “family” here!

I like to watch Carson James’ training videos. This morning he said something simple, yet profound, so I figured I’d share it. “You don’t use your reins to stop a horse; you use them if he doesn’t stop. You don’t kick him to make him go; you kick him if he doesn’t go.” The best riders’ cues are almost invisible. Practice, practice, practice!

😡"Be the alpha mare"
🤠"Get after him - it's no worse than what they do to each other in the field"
💥"You need to be the leader"

How many times have you heard that?

Here’s the hard truth ⬇️

Horses don't need you to dominate them.

They know you're not a horse.

You're not the lead horse or a part of their herd.

What horses need to know is that they are safe, and that they can trust you.

You can have a relationship with your horse where they choose to follow you, but forced obedience and submission is not good leadership or horsemanship.

Be the person your horse chooses, not someone they fear or are stuck with.

Come join in with my Tucson Horseback Riding Meet Up for our last ride. Yes, you have to own your own horse and trailer your buddy to the Cienega Creek Natural Preserve (aka. Davidson Canyon on I-10 E headed toward Benson). Saddle time is 10 am. Bring a lunch and we'll eat back at the trailers.

Want to get your horse used to water? There aren't many places to enjoy this wet stuff in AZ! This ride goes in and out of Cienegra Creek where we will be riding. Some of t
