A mentor is someone who inspires you to be the best version of yourself while challenging you and posing questions to make you think about how to be better and to think logically about the steps to get there. When I first started training dogs I wanted to figure it all out on my own and was afraid to ask questions when I ran into problems. I realize now that so many people are willing to help, you just have to find the ones that connect with you and make them worth listening to. I’m so thankful for this man and his mentorship.

Murphy

Advanced Gun Dog Program

Murphy is full of personality and loves to go to work every day! He came to us in a rough spot mentally but after a couple months he has figured out his purpose and his behavior has followed suit.

Oftentimes I see dogs in homes that do not give them the mental and physical stimulation as well as enrichment they need and it becomes problematic in the desperate need to release it.

Similar to us, when we don’t work out it starts to build up and we often let it out in ways we don’t typically care for looking back at our actions.

Murphy has found his new passion in being a working retriever and will be a better member of society and at home because of figuring out what he’s put here for.

Some days it’s a challenge and can’t sleep at night trying to figure out a plan to fix these dogs. Some days I question my own purpose and other days I look at dogs like Murphy and I’m reminded exactly what I’m here for.

Serving people and their dogs so they can enjoy them in whatever avenue they chose to pursue.

I love what I do and I’m thankful for all the people who have trusted us with their dogs and supported us along the way!

🐶ASSISTANT TRAINER POSITION 🐶

East Carolina Retrievers is searching for a full time assistant trainer.

The person we are looking for must be highly motivated, have a strong work ethic, be able to follow instructions, show up on time, and meticulously care for the dogs in our care.

This position will include assisting with the basics of young trial dogs along with general kennel duties.

Experience is preferred but not required for the right person.

Pay will be based on experience and abilities.

BoBo placed 2nd in both derbies this weekend!

First and foremost I want to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for allowing me the opportunity to be able to do something I love so much and use me in a way that glorifies him!

Make the right things easy and the wrong things hard by slowly adding in the factors that make things more difficult as your pup progresses. When teaching dogs to swim past the gun I prefer to put the wind at their back or pushing them to more water to reward taking more water early on. Sky is currently working on the T and learning to handle so I don’t want to make her fight a crosswind and have her fail and not be confident in doing a challenging retrieve. Brick by brick build on success and you’ll get confidence. Don’t break momentum for any reason as we’re learning something new at least at this age. Set the marks up to reward the dog if they do the right things so long as they give good effort. As they learn to handle, conversely we will start making the factors push the dog into doing the wrong things so we can intervene and teach how to navigate those factors in the field. Go SKY!
