FoFLH has some big changes coming up that we are excited to share with everyone!

The first one of which is that we are opening our lesson program back up!

Offering a wide range of disciplines in both English and Western (Beginner basics, Rodeo events, Dressage, Reining, Ranch Versatility).

We will be opening up Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays afternoon/evenings for lesson spots. We have a couple lesson horses available or you can haul in one of your own!

Ages 6yo-Adult. We do have an indoor arena, so weather won't be an issue. Please contact Amy Ritoch at 816-838-9520 to schedule. Thank you!

This little gal is coming right along. Practicing standing tied during a bath after a very hot day. "Veto" is a pretty nervous sort, so we will be working hard to build her confidence so she can be a successful partner for her owner once she goes home.

What a stunning filly!

"R***r" had his first ride outside of a pen today! Even with a couple horses trying to get him to run and play with them over the fence he did a good job in his session. Steering one handed and off of leg cues a bit, and around obstacles! Tough for a really green one to steer one handed while his rider videos out in the open.

Super happy with his first "long ride"!

Well, we said a very bittersweet goodbye to today. She got to stay an extra week with us so her owner could make arrangements for her to come home after her training was over, but even that wasn't enough for us! We are sure going to miss this sweet girl and can't wait to see her in another year or so to start her! šŸ’œ

had his first saddling session where he didn't try out for the NFR. I'm pretty big on c**ts moving out with confidence and not ever learning how to buck, so it's rare that we get one who tries it more than the first moments of uncertainty during the first saddling. This little guy was pretty dedicated for his first 3 saddling sessions. Today was the first session we did where I really felt him trying to think his way through things and process what was being asked of him. Super successful session, and I'm so proud of him!

"R***r" did really well today! Moving off the leg, moving out, and working on bending and stopping today. Super proud of this big guy staying so focused and mentally with me every step of this ride. Pretty big progress in his softness during this ride. It's looking like his next ride will be in the arena!

I debated with myself whether to post this picture, because in today's world social media can be unkind, but I decided it was worth the education opportunity.

had just finished a bath and was standing tied and got impatient because she knew supper was waiting in her stall and she started pawing in frustration for having to wait to dry off.

I had walked away for a moment to grab fly spray to reapply after bathing, and proof is in the photo that moments like this can happen so fast!

Patience standing tied is a valuable skill for any horse and more importantly, this picture shows possibly the most important skill you can teach a horse...

There are a lot of folks who don't understand the benefits of roping feet, or to push it further, even see it as "abuse". I feel like this picture is worth a thousand words to defend the usefulness and even necessity of teaching young horses using this method (when done properly, I will emphasize!)

Every horse in our program gets their feet roped and learns how to handle pressure and safety when it comes to their legs. Situations just like this one are why! Since "Twister" has had her feet roped, instead of panicking or doing possible harm to herself, she very calmly and patiently waited for me to come pick her leg up out of the fence. Not so much as a scuff mark, because she understands that she had nothing to be scared of when her leg is restrained and that she could trust a human to come fix the situation if she is patient.

Other valuable skills that are secondary to having feet roped are-

1. Hobbling when tying isn't an option.
2. Learning to stop and wait when caught in fencing or vines on the trail.
3. Easier, less stressful farrier visits.
4. Safer for general handling or doctoring/vet work.

Just to name a few! So proud of this little girl and how far she has come from completely unhandled to calmly waiting and trusting people to come help her. šŸ’œ

First ride with steering on "R***r"!

Typically we don't do a lot of directional work during the first few rides. In the words of Ray Hunt "First you go with them, then they go with you, then you go together". Today is "R***r's" first day "Going with me".

He sure is coming along. Won't be long before we're out of the roundpen! This goofy boy is growing on me. He was very cocky, and immature when he first arrived, but he is finally settling into the work and starting to focus on becoming a partner.

is checking things off the list pretty quick. Took all his groundwork and saddle prep totally in stride, until he had to move out with the saddle on. Got a little bothered by that new feeling and bucked a little bit, but came around pretty quick. This blue boy sure is a smart kid.

We ended by stepping up in the stirrups until he wasn't worried about the saddle shifting and he gave me his first attempt at picking up a rider on the fence. Pretty proud of this boy!

"R***r" had a pretty big day today! First rider up and we moved around a bit. Handled it really well and I'm very proud of him!

He's doing well with "picking up a rider" at the fence as well. He's a smart cookie and a bit of a stinker with a HUGE personality. Curiosity and mischief are his middle name, but ww are starting to teach him how to use his powers for good! šŸ˜‚

I don't think it'll ever stop surprising me when people have had a horse started in another trainer's program and they get it home and I get a call asking if I can teach their horse to neck rein.

This is one of FoFLH personal herd and a 3yo stallion. This is his 34th ride ever. These turns are all off of leg cues and I can "neck rein" him anywhere I need to, because he knows how to work off of leg cues. This is where it all starts and I believe that it should start from the very first ride.

I am so proud of this boy! So blessed to be a part of his journey!

Big day for "R***r" yesterday. He did all his groundwork and progressed on his saddle Prep. Then he picked me up from the fence. First time getting on his back and of course I didn't get a picture.

I did however get these! Someone had a REALLY good time in turnout after his training session. I don't think there was an inch of him that wasn't coated in dried mud! Gold stars for effort kiddo! He was squeaky clean by the time I put him in his stall for dinner though. šŸ˜‚

Quick evening tie session while I picked stalls for the evening. One of our personal herd showing how to stand nice and quiet. This was "Twister's" first time being tied solidly and she did SO well.

"R***r" was very annoyed with me at being the last one in earlier and made his feelings known with a very convincing impression of a circus pony! He stood much better this evening however. šŸ’œ

Learning to patiently stand tied is SO important for young horses. I sure am grateful for the great batch of kids in right now.

I am over the moon proud of this little gal! got her first vet visit for vaccinations, and Coggins and an exam. She was cool as a cucumber and stood so patiently while the vet and techs handled her all over. I also wanted to get a video of her loading in the trailer since this is the first time she's been back in the trailer since she arrived, but she walked right on behind me so I wasn't quick enough to get my phone out for a video. Pretty great problem to have since that means she was relaxed and confident to walk in all by herself on her second ever trailer loading in hand!

Pretty big step for who graduated to the big arena for turnout with fellow student . She still met me right at the gate when it was time to come in this evening. I am SO pleased with her progress. Tomorrow is a big day for her, heading to her first official vet visit!

These sure are a couple of sweet girls! šŸ’œ

"R***r" accomplished quite a lot today! We worked on foot roping, desensitizing with the rope, flag, and saddle pad, did our groundwork, AND even started the first steps of "picking up a rider" on the fence. We ended with a nice bath and standing tied on the hot walker. Great job today big fella! šŸ’œ

We often use our FoFLH personal herd to work our training horses. Today and took up their C**t Starting positions again and helped teach "R***r" a bit more about softeness and "Feel".

Today was also a pretty big mile marker for "Sham" since this was his first day working a c**t from the saddle. He is usually my incredibly talented ground crew as seen in picture 3 where he helped "Athena" keep the c**t on task by helping her make her presence bigger.

I am so amazingly blessed with these two. šŸ’œ

having her first "standing tied" and grooming session. Pretty happy with this gal. We shall see how much willingness she has in her when we go to catch her in the roundpen to bring her in from her first turnout session. We don't turn out with halters on, so she will be expected to be haltered and led in and out to and from turnout each time. Can't wait for her next opportunity to choose partnership this evening!

Everyone meet "R***r" who is a buckskin and white painted 6yo registered Missouri Fox Trotter who is with us for the next 90 days to be started under saddle.

As you can see he is quite... ahem... fluffy, so we will be spending the first 30 days focusing on diet and fitness with groundwork so he will be better prepared to carry a rider healthily. He is very sweet and inquisitive about everything! We can't wait to get him started after his settle in day tomorrow!
