Therapy dog class downtown today during casa for kids event.

It was a great event to land at because the dogs and their owners got to experience group pets and lots of children. This gave the handlers the ability to practice their advocacy skills, and their dogs to remain under control despite the excitement.

The dogs even got to experience being bet by humans in Halloween costumes! Spooky!

We were missing one of our ladies today, but they all are excelling in understanding the role, and expectations therapy dogs have. These girls are going to make outstanding therapy dog teams making our community a little bit happier ❤️

Introductions to new animals should always be done on leash, and controlled with as little interference as possible. I usually practice this on a long leash, to give the dog more room to move around as this can help the dog feel safer.
Call-offs are a great way to de-escalate and keep things positive as shown in this video.

All-Encompassing Class for Therapy Dog Work 8-week course.

Temperament testing required before acceptance into class.

A therapy dog class typically trains dogs and their handlers to work together in settings where they can provide comfort, affection, and emotional support to people in need, such as in hospitals, nursing homes, schools, or disaster areas. These classes focus on teaching the dog good manners, calm behavior, and socialization skills while preparing handlers to understand and respond to different environments and people's needs.

1. Proofing Basic Obedience Regardless of environment and distractions

2. Socialization:

Interaction with people who might be using medical equipment, such as wheelchairs, walkers, or crutches.

Visiting different environments to help the dog stay calm and relaxed in various settings.

We placed second in novice obedience A
Hurray!
Thank you to a couple of my clients who helped us practice the long distance stay while being touched.
It was our first time working in front of judges before so we gained much needed experience for future runs! I gained some confidence working in front of others which was our main goal!

I usually keep a lot of opinions to myself but im frusterated enough to put out a PSA about corrections in training, especially in fear cases.

If the timing is wrong, and the clarity is not there corrections can feed into fear issues and make a dog more reactive/fearful.(this is the case for all dogs not just fearful ones) If corrections are used they should be seldom, clear and fair. Dogs don't need to be "put in their place" they need to be lead, and shown that situations are safe and not a stressful experience. (Corrections are different from pressure)

Dogs with fear issues need to be eased into situations they are uncomfortable with. Helping the dog learn around these situations by lowering criteria and easing a dogs state of mind is the correct way of doing so. Most behavioral issues are due to high levels of stress, so its important to understand how my training can detract or add into that stress. Sessions are often shorter, sweeter, and more fun. If my dog breaks a heel, or a stay in order to not react is 100% fine when first traversing harder situations.

Do I believe pushing through pressure is helpful for building confidence? Absolutely.
However there's a point when the dog is not prepared for that pressure yet, and the levels that you'd have to use are no longer pressure and turn into positive punishment and is just unfair. Which increases stress, not decreases. Especially if the dog is not motivated for anything else.

Trainers have different methods, however if someone's only solution to an issue it to correct the dog harder, and harder without attention to the dogs mental state or what that correction is doing, walk away. Period.
I believe trainers like these give balanced trainers bad raps. It is uneducated and lazy training.

If there's something I've learned training for 8 years is dogs will listen if you communicate properly and fairly. That patience is key and time can be your best friend.

The only reason I'm speaking out on this is I now have multiple cases that have been made worse by this wrong interference to a behavioral issue which might've otherwise been an easier fix. Also making a training tool a unusable item in my rehab plan because it now increases stress.
It's frustrating and not fair to the pet parents or the dog.
The last thing you want is your dog to associate corrections with other living animals or people.

I might get backlash for this from others but people should know what good dog training is
It is a lifetime commitment of slow and steady build up that pays off one day. It is not quick. It's easy to force a dog into a position. It's hard to understand and resolve a state of mind.
