Dearest Riders,

Please let me remind you of something very important. Horse showing, riding and training are insanely difficult. If you have a crappy ride, a less than stellar show ring result (or if you made your trainer want to pull their hair out today), it just means there's more to learn. The people who had good rides today are not exempt from disappointing rides tomorrow. They also have bad days and, if they're very experienced riders, they've had a whole bunch of bad days.

There will always be someone out there on a more talented horse, someone with a bigger bank account, someone who never struggled to learn to sit the trot...life isn't fair. You probably can't win the lottery or grow 5 more inches of leg. You can, however, wake up every morning and be thankful that you're able to ride horses. Work hard at becoming the best rider you can be with the body and the bank account that you have right now. Work at being the rider your horse wants up there on his back. Your horse's opinion of your riding is more valuable than any judge's opinion could ever be.

Stall reservations are OPEN for our 41st NCHJA Annual Horse Show!

June 28 - July 2, 2023

The NCHJA Annual Horse Show planning is in full swing. We are excited to be returning to the Carolina Horse Park in Raeford, North Carolina for our 41st Horse Show during our 50th year as an association. We are pleased to have this opportunity and hope that our members and exhibitors will join us in our enthusiasm. We know that horse showing today presents many different opportunities and experiences and we are grateful that you chose us!

As always, the hallmark of our Annual Show is the four equitation medal finals that grant a $1,000 scholarship which is sponsored by the George T. Baker Foundation for the champion of each final. We also feature three Derbies: a $10,000 USHJA National Hunter Derby and a $5,000 USHJA Pony Derby, both of which will be held on the grass derby field, and a $500 Wee Derby. We are honored to have been selected as a USHJA World Championship Hunter Rider Member Event and to once again host the Platinum Performance/USHJA Green Incentive South Regional Championships.

While we plan to host for our members and our exhibitors the same quality horse show as years past, we are excited to bring a few new events and make some improvements to our inaugural show of last year. The Carolina Horse Park is a gorgeous facility and they have been making some improvements of their own, not the least of which are the NEW permanent bathrooms near the office.

The Horse Park has 192 permanent stalls on the premises. As we expect to equal our numbers of last year, we have arranged for 250 extra stalls provided by FEI Stables. These stalls will be housed in 12 separate temporary barns. These stalls are 12 x 14, in single rows, separated by a 12-foot aisle, under a clearspan roof with individual power source provided to each stall.

Stabling is limited and will be assigned on a first come, first serve basis. Stalls can be reserved beginning March 1, 2023 and will be invoiced promptly. Stalls are being sold at $300 per stall with a $10 discount offered per stall for any stalls paid for before April 1, 2023. There will be no refunds after May 1, 2023. Hay and shavings orders should be made with stall request. Initial order can be changed through June 22, 2023 and added to during the horse show. Please use the form provided (via link or QR code) to reserve your stalls, you will be invoiced through your email. Please provide trainer name for stabling purposes or preferably, send in all reservations with trainer at the same time.

We are looking forward to a great show and are excited about some of our plans for this year and hope that all of you will be also. Please look for more information in the next few weeks about our show and reach out to us with any questions. We have many sponsorship opportunities available and will be looking for volunteers to help with planning prior to the show and volunteers for some big and small things during the show.

Things to think about…..11 days before the beginning of Daylight Savings Time, 31 days to receive a discount on stalls, 39 days before Easter, 61 days to make stall reservations, 74 days before Mother’s Day and 116 days before MOVE IN DAY for our NCHJA Annual Horse Show!

“Unless you have several horses to ride and jump often, don’t underestimate the value of practice over poles on the ground. You can incorporated them daily with your flatwork with little or no impact on your horse in comparison to jumping. If you have access to cavaletti practice over them will give you a little more feel of a jump and emphasize a distance mistake more clearly than a pole. Even a low will be sufficient, and again be minimal stress on the horse compared to jumping higher fences.
Imagine if you practiced 25 poles daily, 4 days a week. That’s 400 times in a month you have practiced seeing and executing a distance in addition to the amount of jumps you may have jumped. Now that’s progress!”

3/4 Lease. On-Site only. 1 mile from CHP.
14 year old 16.3h TB Gelding. Has evented through Novice and has schooled higher. Same guy wether you ride daily or once a month but he is not for a beginner as his canter can get more forward. You would have full availability to ride during the week and potential to show on weekends with advance notice. PM for details.

This makes me twitch. If you have to make it that tight - your saddle doesn’t fit and/or you can’t sit straight.

This makes me twitch. If you have to make it that tight - your saddle doesn’t fit and/or you can’t sit straight.

PSA... Over the past couple weeks of horseshows, I’ve spent a lot of time ringside. It is CRAZY how tight people are girthing up just before they go into the ring. An over-tightened girth may pinch and bruise the muscles - in particular the pectorals, trapezius, serratus ventralis muscles and latissimus dorsi (see red areas in diagram bleow). This muscle group (also known as part of the thoracic sling) is crucial for movement. Besides soft tissue, an over tightened girth may also cause bruising of the ribs, the intercostal muscles between the ribs, And increase the overall pressure of the saddle on the back muscles. Check your girth underneath their chest, NOT on the side. You will be surprised the difference one hole can make, and quite literally give your horse some breathing room.

BY LAUREN MAULDIN It’s that time of year. When you don’t know if you’ll go to the barn to find your horse covered in blankets or covered in mud. In Texas, we have the added benefit of going from 80 degrees to 30s in a matter of days. For many of us, that means body […]
