Baby (L) and Frankie are finally enjoying their hoof trims again. Farriers come and go especially with minis. It’s a lot of bending over and their backs can’t handle it after a bit. Our current farrier Jouquin is great and promises to stick around.

Do you remember where you were on September 11th when you heard the horrific details unfolding that changed this country forever? I do. I was at home with my daughter when she yelled “ Mom a plane just crashed into a big building in New York”. WHAT?? This was the first time she was experiencing breaking news and explaining it to me. It had always been the other way around. On the tv people were frantic to find their families and friends. I started to panic. I knew Jeff was at work but my youngest kid was at 6th grade camp up in the mountains!! The school assured us they were locked down, safe and knew nothing. At pickup, 5 days later, we were asked to discuss this at home because 12 students had lost family in the towers and planes. The courage of our first responders and ordinary people who paid the ultimate sacrifice helping others is immeasurable. Please take a minute today to remember this tragedy and lives lost or affected that we should never forget. 🙏 for 🇺🇸

Today we remember our little Penquin. Penquin recently celebrated her 3rd birthday. Around the beginning of August she flew out of the coop and injured her leg. We let her hang out with her sisters until she wasn’t healing. Put her in a small enclosure with no change. On our way to the vet appt we stopped at Costco. (Picture 1). She was so happy with everything she was seeing. She clucked and looked around the whole time. I am so glad she got those moments because the vet didn’t go like I had hoped. Penquin had fractured her leg. Recovery would be long and hard. Vet and I agreed to let her go. I explained to Penquin the situation and she seemed at peace. The 2nd picture was her last and she looks beautiful. I know she was greeted by many of our flock. 😪❤️

We survived Tropical Storm Hilary!! It was pretty crazy at times though. Before the center arrived the rain was heavy but I was still able to do chores. When the center came in things started to get interesting. All the animals started to let me know they were not amused. In CA we are not required to provide shelter for livestock. I absolutely do not support that. Even though we always provide shelters the little boogers don’t use them. 🙄😂. When the back end came in then the fun started. Of course it was feeding time and the horses will let you know if you are running late. The rain was so hard that while making salads for Sharlet and Sewfee I had to stay inside longer. I then made a run for the trailer. The horse feed was inside so it was easy to prep but going out wasn’t an option. I literally stood in the trailer holding the door closed for an hour!! Heavy rain and lots of wind continued but I had to make a run for it. The horses and goats were finally fed and very grateful. I am happy that with a bit of trenching the stall waters flowed into the field. Definitely an experience. 😊

I decided that although posting our rescue on fb is stressful for me I am going to make it a priority. This is about the animals. So much has happened in almost a year that I wasn’t sure where to start. I figured I would say something like “we have all heard people say they are sweating like a pig. Funny thing is pigs can’t sweat. They have no sweat glands”. Like a lot of other places our temperatures have been consistently high and a challenge. Extra water buckets, shade cloths to be hung, different feed, hosing down enclosures and being extra cautious with the animals health. There have been wildfires in the area but thankfully going the opposite direction. Yesterday we got alerts that said to emergency secure all properties because we have a big storm coming our way. That storm is actually a Tropical Storm that will be a downgrade from Cat 4 Hurricane Hillary. This has never happened here so I’m not sure how stressed I’m suppose to be. We are currently in the middle of the path. I have secured what I can think of and will deal with things as they happen. If you are also in this situation please stay safe and reach out to others if you need help. We have a great network here for emergency animal rescue and i won’t hesitate to reach out to them if needed.
