I was recently asked about our new tribute posts when a client's pet has passed. The person felt sad about it and wondered how I managed it and what the purpose was. Of course, we are very sad and cry along with you when you lose a pet. When we've cared for them they become our babies as well as yours. But these posts really are a tribute to them. I'm honoring them. I can tell you that while writing each post a smile will break through the tears. The memories of the silly things they've done with me, the loving things. And even the very rare times they may have frustrated me. It's our way of saying we loved them then and love them still. With a smile and a memory.❤️

This beautiful baby recently crossed over the bridge. Stormy was 24 years old and in spite of living with kidney disease she was a loving, active, and in your face cat. A cat that wanted to know what you were doing. And, of course, she wanted to love on you while watching you. Her age is a testament to the care her owner gave her. ❤️ you Stormy

[NOTE: This photo is just picture of a pond in the summer. NOT a picture of a pond with the toxin.] Cyanobacteria can have many different looks, including not being visible at all. Link to Kentucky Division of Water for more photos and information: https://eec.ky.gov/Environmental-Protection/Water/Monitor/Pages/HABS.aspx #:~:text=Harmful%20Algal%20Blooms%20Division%20of%20Water&text=A%20harmful%20algal%20bloom%2C%20or,skin%20in%20animals%20or%20humans.
"Death follows minutes to hours after exposure to a small amount of this toxin." As the weather gets hotter, ponds can start to have "algae blooms." The water itself can look like pea soup, or like green paint is spread on the surface of the water. Sometimes it is not visible at all. Some of these blooms are cyanobacteria, which can produce potent toxins. Dogs are exposed when they wade in the water and either drink the water directly, or lick it off themselves when they come out. There is no antidote; treatment is supportive and many dogs don't survive. If you believe your dog has been exposed, bathe him immediately. If he has any symptoms, bring him right in to a veterinarian. See comments for more information about signs and treatment. (Most ponds that look like this are not dangerous, but it is not possible to tell which ones are toxic and which ones aren't except by having the water tested; If in doubt, keep pets out.) Edited to add links to more pond phots.

There she was, desperately searching for her stolen babies. When Animal Control Officer Walsh sent me the picture of this mother raccoon, my heart sank.

I knew where her babies were. I had them…

You see, Officer Walsh had received a call that day about 5 baby raccoons dumped in a forest. Next to them, a bunch of scattered charcoal. They were only about a week old. She brought them to us immediately, for care.

She told me she was fairly certain she knew where they came from. Three days earlier she went to a house after a receiving a complaint about a raccoon. A man showed her a barrel of charcoal under his grill. Inside the barrel - 5 baby raccoons. He wanted the raccoons relocated. Officer Walsh explained to him that relocation was illegal and gave advice regarding other options.

The babies were found not far from this man’s house and the charcoal was a dead give away.

The animal control officer drove by the house and there she saw the mother raccoon - with a look of panic and desperation in her eyes. A look that would make any mother want to cry.

The environmental police were called and the situation was reported. The home owner was called as well. He confessed to his crime. Officer Walsh insisted he let her try and reunite this mother with her babies.

We knew the mother raccoon would not be bringing them back to the grill. Mama’s don’t put their babies back to areas where they know they aren’t safe. The babies were placed somewhere safe where mama could find them.

She came back for four of the five babies. We don’t know why she didn’t return for the fifth. Maybe the emergency den she had to find was too small for all of them. It’s hard to know.

The remaining baby is now with us. This situation makes me very sad and angry, but it could have been way worse.

This was a result of ignorance and a lack of compassion. We have multiple posts and videos regarding how to deal with these situations.

I am so grateful for Animal Control Officer Walsh who went above and beyond the reunite these babies with their mother.

A big thank you to Nature's Nurse Wildlife Rehabilitation for your help in this as well. Stacey Cobb went back to the scene to hydrate the babies while we waited for mom to collect them all.

Last but not least, thank you to our office manager, Marjorie, who drove these babies to and from to make sure they got the help they needed.

This situation could have been way worse. A lot of good people worked together to prevent any loss of life. I am very grateful for that. 🙏
