Ear mites are most commonly seen in cats, but can also be found in ear canals of dogs, rabbits, and ferrets. Animals with ear mites shake their heads and scratch at their ears. Ear mites are highly contagious, and animals become infested by direct contact with another infested animal. The mites themselves are difficult to see with the naked eye, but are easily seen under the microscope. This is 1 field from 1 flake of ear debris in a cat. As you can see, the number of ear mites is astounding! Ear mites can easily be treated and prevented with monthly preventatives.
Fleas aren't always obvious. Some animals don't even scratch at them. Fleas can transmit diseases and are difficult to eliminate from the environment once they are there. Fleas can survive year-round, despite the cold weather, so it is important to keep your pet on year-round preventative. Call today to get started!
Ear mites
Ear mites are highly contagious, and animals become infested by direct contact with another infested animals. Although more common in kittens or puppies, ear mites can be found in any age group. Dogs are not as commonly affected as cats.
Symptoms of ears mites are shaking the head or scratching at the ears. You may also see dark debris in the ear canals. There are several ear medications licensed for the treatment of ear mites in pets. Ear mites can be treated either with a topical monthly product or a local product put into the ears. All affected pets will need to be treated in order to eliminate the spread.
Do ear mites affect people? Ear mites may cause a temporary itchy rash on susceptible people if there are infested pets in the household, although this is considered to be a rare event. Eradication of the mites from the pets will cure the problem.
Puppies First Visit
We have 4 cute puppies visit us for their first puppy vaccine today. They were cute and very well behaved for their exams.
Our Vet Tech, Steph's dog had a hitchhiker when he came into the clinic. Stevie Cheeks the Elf has arrived. We are curious to see what kind of mischief he gets into this holiday season. Harry was a good sport about being walked by an Elf.
