🔥Started 2024 with Maddie and Butters’ first actual lesson with me this weekend! We pushed out of their comfort zone by removing the training wheels so to speak in the snaffle and riding on a completely loose rein one handed to begin to teaching more self carriage beginning with guiding and then moving into getting this mare in position to round her back to use her hindquarters properly on her own as she works. This is just the start! They were excellent students, even took notes to refer back to! 🔥If you are just beginning to train or looking to improve your side pass, take it to the fence. Working laterally near the fence focuses your horse on the cue and prevents them from walking out from your leg. Use your voice (I like to say “over”) as you initiate the leg cue with steady calf pressure with leg in line under your hip to move the ribs and consequently the whole body sideways. Keep your hand centered, quiet, and only help shift the shoulders as needed should your horse get out of alignment. Reward good effort from your horse by releasing pressure and standing. Work both left and right and build with each session until your horse is gliding confidently with cadence off your leg. Then start taking your work away from the fence and then also over a pole so you will be ready for any ranch riding or ranch trail pattern. Ashley Dunn is doing a great job here with Apollo in this process. 💪🏼
