NEW KID ON THE BLOCK: REX!
Just took in this friendly, energetic 17-mos old intact male GSD today from his person who lives in Patterson. The "dog dad" was no longer able to keep Rex due to a forced move (sale of rental house) and a "no pets" policy at his new rental house. Rex was destined to be dropped off at the shelter like so many poor dogs in Rex's situation.
I received a solid offer to foster a GSD of my choice from a woman in Reno a few days ago, and this is what allowed me to say "Yes" to taking in Rex.
If Rex had ended up in the shelter, odds are very high that he would not have made it out alive. So, you see, fostering really does save lives!
Leo Dropping Ball in Sink
Since I have no new rescues or adoptions to share, I thought I'd post this silly video I just took today of "Leo", a 4-yo neutered male GSD/Belgian Malinois/??? available for adoption from GSRSV.
Leo is friendly, protective and very active. He is good with kids, other dogs, and possibly cats.
Leo LOVES to play fetch and is extremely skilled at this sport. He is apparently good at bathroom sink golf, too, as the video attests!
Please see Leo's full adoption profile at www.gsrsv.org/GSRSVAdoptionDogs.htm.
Hazelnut Playing Tug with Leo
UPDATE ON HAZELNUT (RESCUED 9-10-23)
Hazelnut is doing great at GSRSV's rescue ranch. She gets along great w/ the other dogs (for the most part) and is an absolute love.
I introduced her to her first human visitors yesterday, and she was predictably sketchy: barked at them with teeth bared, lunged a couple of times, but didn't bite them (fortunately). After the initial encounter she grew fairly comfortable with them, though they understandably opted not to reach out to pet her.
I'll need to socialize Hazelnut a little more w/ strangers before I list her for adoption. If you know anyone who wants a super-loving, playful, overly-protective 3-yo female GSD, please let me know!
Hazelnut & GSRSV Dogs at Pond, 9-12-23
Here's a video of Hazelnut (see two previous posts) getting her water wings in the pond at GSRSV's rescue ranch on 9-12-23, the same day she arrived. The Tracy animal shelter staff told me Hazelnut loved water, and they weren't kidding!
Hazelnut's Freedom Video
Hazelnut, a beautiful 3-yo spayed female GSD, leaves the Tracy animal shelter after 449 days--to the delight of the shelter staff who loved her.
MEET 'RIDER", GSRSV'S LATEST RESCUE
GSRSV rescued Rider, an approx 1 1/2-yo neutered male GSD, from the Monterey County animal shelter in Salinas last Friday, 8-18.. Rider had been at the shelter since July 14 and had developed "kennel stress" (barking, panting, circling, jumping), rendering him unadoptable by the shelter. No rescue group had committed to rescue Rider, and since the shelter can't hold on to dogs indefinitely they planned to euthanize him on 8-19 or 8-20.
Monterey County animal control officer Gina Wolf contacted me early last week to see if I could rescue Rider. Though adoptions are horribly slow right now and I'm trying my best to avoid taking in any more dogs, I couldn't see a dog as young as Rider losing his life simply because he was going nutso in confinement--as so many GSDs do. Further, I admire Gina's efforts to save the lives of so many dogs at the shelter. So, I arranged to have Rider neutered and transported to Southside Park in Sacramento.
As you can see from the video here, Rider is far from being nutso. In fact, he's a pretty cool customer! Wasn't reactive towards other dogs, people, or even little kids running & yelling right near him at the park.
Look for Rider's adoption listing on the GSRSV Website (www.gsrsv.org/GSRSVAdoptionDogs.htm) soon.

Gloria is still available for adoption. If interested, shoot Brian a message at [email protected].
NEARLY FIFTEEN YEARS OLD AND STILL GOING STRONG!
The video here highlights my nearly 15-yo neutered male Chow/GSD "Duke" as he cavorts with his buddies at the GSRSV Rescue Ranch on June 6, 2023.
I took in Duke from another rescue group up in Orland back on Sept 17, 2011 when he was three years old. Duke is quite the character, and over the course of two years he was adopted four times and returned to me four times! The most recurrent reason that people returned Duke to me was that he was overly-protective of his people. He was also ornery with other dogs.
After Duke's fourth return, I told him "Duke, this is your permanent home now. Welcome to the pack." Ironically, Duke became quite the ambassador to people visiting GSRSV's rescue ranch, never showing any aggression to anyone. In fact, Duke always seeks the affection of visitors and is a fan favorite here.
On October 22, 2022, Duke suffered a serious stroke. He became temporarily immobile and his head was canted 45 degrees to the left. Within a few days, Duke was back on his feet but his head remained canted over. Further, he didn't eat for about five days and I figured his time was just about up.
Slowly, Duke began to eat again and his head began to straighten out. He became less wobbly on his feet and started to regain his spunky spirit.
Fast forward to today. Duke completely recovered from his stroke, and is his old cantankerous self now. He routinely trots out to the gate (about 150 yards from the house) to greet visitors and often joins the other GSRSV dogs in our daily romp around the 45-acre property here (as pictured in the video).
Each day that Duke greets me with his tail wagging and that hoarse bark of his, I take as a gift.
Morale of the story? Don't give up on that old dog of yours; it ain't over 'til it's over!
You go, Duke!
(USED) TENNIS BALLS, ANYONE?
The GSRSV dogs are requesting donations of used tennis balls to play with--especially to fetch in their ponds.
Any and all balls will be much appreciated. Please contact Brian at either [email protected] or 530-415-3801to arrange for pick-up or delivery. You can also mail tennis balls to:
GSRSV, PO Box 652, Pleasant Grove, CA 95668.
The dogs and I thank you!
The Underdog Railroad's Cara Kinzel celebrated her "bestest dog" Benny's 7th shelter break anniversary on Friday by taking him out for his favorite food: PIZZA!
Cara and her partner Gary were fostering a few Sheps for GSRSV back in 2016, and Benny became their first foster failure--much to Benny's delight!
If you don't know about Cara's life-saving work with The Underdog Railroad, you owe it to yourself to check out her FB page: https://www.facebook.com/underdograilroadtransport/.
Moxie!
UPDATE 11-20-22: MOXIE ADOPTED MID-NOVEMBER!
"Moxie" is a 3-yo spayed female GSD mix available for adoption at the Colusa County Animal Shelter in Colusa. Moxie has a very sweet temperament. I met her on Nov 12 and took the attached video of her. I was truly impressed by this dog. She will make a fantastic pet!
Moxie was taken in as a stray on Oct 15 and nobody came to claim her. (In the video I mistakenly state that Moxie has been at the shelter since September.)
Moxie is not only spayed but fully vaccinated and microchipped. Her adoption fee is only $10!
Please contact the Colusa County Shelter at (530) 458-0247 Mon-Sun 8:00 AM-4:00 PM to inquire about Moxie.
Who says that GSDs and Belgian Malinois can't get along with little dogs?
This video is of Leo, a 4-yo neutered male GSD/Bel Mal cross, playing with Maggie, a 1 1/2-yo spayed female Terrier mix (?). GSRSV rescued Leo from the Stanislaus County Shelter in Sept 2019 and Joe Corpe & Marcella Castro of Vallejo adopted him in April 2020. Leo was still a little rough around the edges, but Joe & Marcella stayed with him and now Joe just raves about him. In Joe's own words:
"Just wanted to let you know once again how grateful we are to have Leo; he’s a truly amazing dog. It still baffles me we’re his third home! We’re so happy you adopted him to us, he’s grown so much as a well rounded dog. I’ve never met a dog who’s such a sweet-hearted lover but also still a fierce protector of his home. I would not feel as safe leaving my house without him being here! He’ll always be in good care here; he is everything to us!"
Frankly, I was pretty nervous when I heard that Joe & Marcella got a little dog, but my nervousness was clearly unwarranted.
You go, Leo & Maggie!
Lola arrived at Southside Park in Sacramento this evening around 7:00 PM. Charlie Remsen (Lola's transporter) and I walked her around the park. What a sweet, easy-going dog! Here's a video of Lola & Charlie walking together.
Ready for some hot bedroom action? Look no further!
The star of this sizzling doggy video is Simba, the 13-wk old GSD pup I rescued a couple of weeks ago. His co-star is Mari, who has an adoption pending.
Simba's adoptioin profile can be viewed at www.gsrsv.org/GSRSVAdoptionDogs.htm.
Get in line, ladies (and gents)!
When it comes to staying cool, who knows better than a Husky?
Nothing like dead branches to chew on and a cool pond to wade in on a warm June day. 13-yo Apollo doing just that at GSRSV's rescue ranch.
It's "Howdy Cookie Time" for Beau (formerly Poe).
What a wonderful little video, courtesy of Catherine Guttierez, Beau's adopter from June 2020.
Apollo Retrieving Anthony's Keys
Apollo, a 2-yo male German Shepherd adopted from GSRSV by Anthony Mack of Sacramento on July 15, 2018, retrieves Anthony's keys--a task that Anthony himself taught Apollo. No big deal, you say? Au contraire.
Anthony has cerebral palsy and is mostly wheelchair-bound. He is high-functioning and plays fetch with Apollo several times a day in his backyard. Oh--he also took the video below.
Anthony loves Apollo like nothing else and Apollo returns that love in kind. See https://www.orcagsrescue.org/Apollo&Anthony7-15-18.jpg for Apollo's adoption picture w/ Anthony.
UPDATE 10-14-17:ANGEL HAS A NEW HOME!
*******911***** NEW HOME NEEDED BY SUNDAY 10/15*****
Please keep all comments geared to helping Angel find a new place. Negative comments will be removed.
UPDATE 10-13-17: I (Brian Foran) met Angel today and what a doll! Angel is deserving of her namesake. She's welcoming to strangers but protective at the right times, great with young children, good with both large and small dogs, and even good with cats! Her best bud was a male Chihuahua who passed away this year at 14 yo.
Angel is completely housetrained and can be left inside the house for upward of 8 hours without a problem. She's not a barker. She does pull strongly on leash, even with a harness, but that's indicative of what good shape she's in for her age!
Angel likes to play fetch, but is better at fetching the toy than bringing it back. She's crazy about treats, but is not overweight.
Please, please consider adopting or fostering Angel. If you're interested in adopting Angel, please contact Debbie Duncan at 916-580-7610. If you're willing to foster her, please contact Brian at 916-655-3125 or [email protected].
*******************************************
Angel is a 9-10 year old German Shepherd looking for a new home. She is well behaved around other animals and is very loyal to the ones she loves. Due to unfortunate circumstances we are unable to bring her with us where we are going. I have been searching for any no-kill animal shelters or foster homes to take her in until she finds a new family to adopt her. There are no current or prior medical problems or concerns and she is very healthy. If there is anyone who is interested in helping foster or adopt her please call or text 9165807610 (Debbie Duncan) or 5303209586 (Lisa Duncan)
