Tough day tracking. My main place for practice has been flooded for a month, but I thought it would be dried up today... after sinking calf deep in mud, I decided it was still too wet.
Then I decided to lay tracks on the fields behind the high school. Easy lines to follow, lots of space, and some distractions sprinkled in. Well, sometime between 8 this morning and when I went to run the tracks at 4, they mowed...
It was also 85 and breezy today, certainly not ideal tracking conditions.
Long story short, we learned, we still got practice in, and that's better than any day on the couch!

We ran our first practice tracks of the season today. Was expecting some mistakes but both dogs crushed it! Was really happy to see them both making corrections!
The blue lines in the pictures are the tracks we laid and let sit for 4 hours. Hoof and minimal blood. Green is Boone's line. Purple is Remi's.
Boone missed a 90 but corrected himself, which was awesome to see! RJ and him are becoming quite a team!
Remi was hesitant to cross the creek but knew he needed to. After that it was a race to the finish (with some wind scenting like he likes to do...).

RJ and Boone put a giant on the tailgate this morning! Hunter knew he hit back and backed right out last night. We went 250 yards this morning and started finding bloody beds closer and closer together through the cattails. Found him dead in the next bed facing his back trail. 17 hours after the shot and he was still warm! If the hunter tracked him last night I highly doubt he would've found him, and if he did the deer would have certainly still been alive.
Boone's best buck to date!

Great news!!! Boone got a clean bill of health from the vet this morning! Then he crushed this track!!! 600 yards from the shot, 300 yards from blood loss. Once we locked on it was was go time!

Got a call you never wants to get this morning... our dog Boone was hit by a car. We were in Kansas for a college visit at the time...
Luckily he'll be ok, just bumps, bruises, and stitches. But his season is most likely over :(

We had a wild one tonight!!! RJ and Boone got to track for a fellow youth hunter. As we started finding blood we noticed corn in it... I was a little nervous about wait times, but we charged ahead. As Boone walked up to the deer it stood up and took off!!! Luckily it crashed 50 yards later and we recovered it. What a night!!!

I shot my personal best this morning! I thought it was a solid hit but my wife wanted to try tracking with Boone. 150 yards right to him! They both crushed it! Happy family tonight

Nothing like a late night recovery to get Remi back on track! Remi fooled around for the first 10 minutes in the corn, but once he locked on he went 156 yards in 3 minutes right to this beautiful 8 point!

"Stay off the shoulder".
Very few archers have the equipment to punch through the shoulder. Heck, I've even tracked shotgun deer that haven't gotten through!
I'm not saying aim for guts. But, if you happen to hit farther back, get out of there and call a dog! It is a guaranteed dead deer, and if handled correctly, is a very high recovery rate! Wait at least 12 hours, as it takes that long to die (sometimes longer). Meat will NOT spoil while the blood still pumping.

It's been a long time coming but Boone and RJ got it done this morning!!! So proud of both of them. We've now got two official tracking teams that I am confident will be finding deer this fall! Give us a call!
