I'm going to try to write this post as nicely as I can.
If you think it is okay, AS A STRANGER, to enter a property with closed gates and the proceed to enter other people's barn AND touch their horses, let me tell you; IT IS NOT OKAY. EVER. Let me list a few examples of why this isn't okay:

1. You may think the gate is there to keep animals in, and in some cases that may be true, but in most cases, gates are put up and closed to keep people out.

2. Those warning signs about guard dogs, they are not just posted for fun. They are to let you know there are actual guard dogs on the property, and the one running toward you with its tail wagging isn't always your friend.

3. And just because YOUR horse is friendly, doesn't mean that every horse is.

4. Sure, you're just looking for a boarding facility, but as you are out on a nice Sunday drive entering stranger's barns and properties, you may actually be spreading diseases around. There is almost always some sort of outbreak going around and we don't want it in our barn, thank you very much.

We've been working on getting double stalls for everyone since they all come in at night winter time. 3 out of 4 done! 😊

I wanted to extend a big thank you to everyone who reached out during the Jory Hill/Liberty fire. Within an hour of the fire starting, I had friends and complete strangers calling me to see how they could help. I had offers for places to stay, loading/hauling help, stalls for the horses & someone to watch the kids. We got lucky and didn't have to evacuate this time around, but I am beyond thankful to live in such a great community where people will step up and help at a moments notice. I appreciate you all!♥️♥️

Penny is almost 7 months and is learning about lots of new things daily. She is gradually getting weaned from her mom and will happily stay in her own stall or have a few hours of playtime with uncle Enzo. Zero worries about mom, rubber bands, or saddle pads. 😍

DID YOU KNOW FRIESIAN HORSES HAVE DIFFERENT BLOOD VALUES?

A research study conducted in 2015 by the Fenway Foundation for Friesian Horses, in cooperation with the University of Wisconsin’s School of Veterinary Medicine, determined that Friesians have 3 hemotologic and 2 biochemical values which differ from other horses.

The study involved 123 adult Friesian horses from the USA and Canada. Researchers compared the complete blood count and chemistry values of Friesians to general horse population reference intervals for adult horses. The difference in Friesian values included lower red blood cell count, lower hemoglobin, lower hematocrit, lower glucose, and higher lactate dehydrogenase.

RECOMMENDED FRIESIAN SPECIFIC VALUES
Red Blood Cell Count (RBC): 5.02-8.74 10/uL
Hemoglobin (HGB): 9.0-14.3 g/dL
Hematocrit (HCT): 27-42 %
Glucose: 62-95 mg/dl
Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH): 299-866 U/L

By using these Friesian specific values, over-diagnosis in Friesian horses can be avoided when it comes to conditions such as anemia, hypoglycemia, and muscle or liver injury - thus eliminating unnecessary diagnostics and treatment. It will also help to alleviate the confusion that occurs when a Friesian horse fails to respond to therapy.

By using Friesian specific values, veterinarians can correctly interpret blood results and gain a better understanding what is truly happening with that Friesian horse.

Reference: Sample SH, Fox KM, Wunn D, Roth E, Friedrichs KR. Hematologic and biochemical reference intervals for adult Friesian horses from North America. Vet Clin Pathol. 2015 Jun;44(2):194-9.https://www.fenwayfoundation.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/06/Friesian-Blood-Study.pdf

**Values Determined using Sysmex XT hematology analyzer and the Olympus AU/700 chemistry analyzer. These reference intervals are most appropriately used with blood analyzed on these same analyzers. Trends are appropriate to consider when assessing Friesian blood work in daily practice.**

At clinics, rarely do I get to help people with advanced work (even if they think they are ready for it) because usually the basics are “ok”. When you try to build advanced movements out of “ok” basics you end up with trouble in that movement.

Basics are hard, mostly because they can seem ok, but it’s the details that matter.

I was recently chatting with a friend who is an Olympic showjumping coach. He has competed at 3 Olympic Games and has coached his National team at 3 others.

I said to him “ you do lots of clinics around the world, do you ever run into people that can jump say, a metre, but want to jump higher, but in order to jump higher you have to take them back to the start, back to ground rails ?”

“All the time”, he said. “I rarely encounter anyone who wants to jump higher and is ready for it.”

Once you get the basics really good, the “hard” things are actually easy. It sounds completely backwards to most people, but once you get your head around it, the game changes completely.
