For Sakura's first time seeing a hog outside of a smaller pig in an enclosure, I am quite pleased with how she did at her first ever hog bay, especially since she is currently in season.
Her solo run she was more confused why she was there, thus my friend pulled her early to ensure she didn't have a bad experience. Once I saw that video, I was okay with trying her in a two dog bay with her best Shikoku Ken gal pal, which, she did immensely better in. It's nowhere near perfect, and she easily could have been hurt or have a bad experience to the point she couldn't go on boar again, but I know my dog and it was a risk I was willing to take. I know she is a confident dog that bounces back quite easily, but I also know she didn't have as "strong" of a reaction as Kaede did when they first saw the smaller pig a while ago. I wasn't expecting a whole lot out of her, but she surprised me and finished the run strong, even if they earned no points for losing focus.
Ideally, you want to expose your dog to pigs/dogs that are smaller in size initially and work them up to a larger hog, as well as having them behind a barrier. Unfortunately, I only had the opportunity to show them a smaller pig behind a barrier once, though I would have liked to expose both of my Kishu Ken to more.
This may not be the same equivalent as hunting, but it is something, and I am immensely proud of my little 32 pound girl for holding her own. I truly have regrets for not being able to attend, myself, with both of my dogs, but things happen and I just couldn't go down myself. I'm just eternally grateful my friend was able to take my girl with them! Hopefully we can get more exposure and attend more hog bays in the future, and get Kaede out there, too. Eventually I hope they gain the experience to be more efficient in their baying, especially with our upcoming move to Texas 🤞🏻 It'd be awesome if I can eventually get these dogs out hunting as the hound they were bred and meant to be.
Thank you
Sakuras first and only Q from this weekend! We are now at 2/3 RATO Q's, but we need to take time and work on the tunnel more, which is fine. She has fun doing this sport and HIGHLY enjoys finding the rats 🐀
To be fair, this was our first trial in a year, and we haven't worked on it since the last trial. She was getting frustrated at the time as she could ACTUALLY have the rat, so I told myself we'd take a year off and let her have a break from the game, which definitely helped. I didn't want her to get burnt out and not enjoy one of the games she absolutely loves. I initially was only signed up for 1 of the 2 days, which may have been the smarter way to go to not "waste" money, but she had fun, which is what matters the most to me.
Sure, I love the alphabet soup on my dogs, but I'm also not overtly competitive. It IS nice when my dogs do very well and DO have higher placements but I do this for them, and I enjoy seeing them in their element!
It's always a joy doing fun things with this boy! He has such a great drive to work and do new things, especially with food rewards 😌
