How does your dog feel about getting injections?
We highly recommend everyone train their dog to be more comfortable with injections. Not only will this reduce their stress during routine vet visits, but if your dog ever needs regularly injected medication, you will already be ready.
This was an important skill for Toby to learn. He get's weekly injections for his allergies.

Not every dog likes being brushed, especially when it comes to the tail and ears.
But did you know you can teach your dog to be more comfortable with brushing?
While they may never love it, you can help your dog tolerate being brushed, and reduce the stress to both of you during brushing sessions!

Have you heard the words "cooperative care" but aren't sure what that means or how it could help your dog?
This term describes training your dog to be a willing participant in their care! This means teaching them to allow bathing, nail trimming, tooth brushing, and more.

We are celebrating our specially abled dogs today.
Just because a dog is "different", does not mean they need to live a life in bubble wrap. If you have a unique dog, you can still train them, walk them, and provide fun enrichment games for them. In fact, they may even enjoy it more than your "normal" dog!
What have you done to make your specially abled dog's life special?

Mowgli recently graduated from AKC Fit Dog Level 1! #CanineFitnessMonth
In the obstacle course you see him utilize a variety of equipment:
-Cavaletti poles: increases limb awareness by having dogs lift each limb individually and really think about where theyâre walking.
-Balance pad: by targeting his front feet onto a balance pad, Mowgliâs weight shifts to his back legs and creates a balance challenge for his front legs.
-Klimb: by stretching on an inclined Klimb platform Mowgli stretches his back legs/groin area as well as his back and neck!
Mowgli and his parents did so well in Level 1, and we canât wait to see where they go throughout their training!

2023 was my second year of training dogs full time â¨
None of this would be possible without my wonderful clients! Thank you for trusting me with your pups and for choosing a humane way to help them live their best lives.
Between getting to help so many pet parents and their dogs, getting engaged, & getting Toby back to normal life through physical therapy, 2023 was a pretty great year. I canât wait to continue helping people and their pups either through private training, group classes, or my social media pages. Iâm excited to see what 2024 brings & hope all of you have a great year too đ đž

Muzzle training is good pet parenting! Not only does a muzzle keep your dog and people around your dog safe, it is good to do "preventatively" in case your dog is ever injured and needs to wear a muzzle for treatment.
Is your dog muzzle trained? How long did the training take you?

Does your dog go on sniffaris?
Toby is always allowed to sniff on normal walks, but he gets a special sniffari walk on my days off when I don't have a time constraint. I take him to an empty park early in the morning so that we don't see many other dogs, and so that he can walk as slowly as he wants to.
Why is sniffing is important? It's like a dog's social media or newspaper: scrolling through to see what's been going on in the world!
For reactive dogs:
Go somewhere early in the AM away from other people and dogs, such as an an empty lot or rent a Sniffspot just for your dog.
If its not possible to find a place for a sniffari, you can "create" a sniffari at home by letting them sniff something they may usually not get to; your clothes after doing goat yoga, shoes after a long day at work, the inside and outside of your car!
What is your dog's favorite thing to sniff?

"Samson" was living with a family who abused him for the first year of his life. After finding out about him through a mutual friend, the family surrendered him to me.
I kept Sam for a few months as a foster dog, looking for potential adopters.
Sam had a short life, that I believe was truly enhanced by someone giving him a chance, and treating him like a 'typical' dog. We went to parks, went swimming, and he got to live with 2 dog friends. He did things a little differently than a sighted dog, but had so much fun learning new things and didn't let being blind stop him.
By building his confidence and giving him dog experiences, Sam was able to life his life to the fullest. If you have a blind dog, consider hiring a trainer who can help you bring out your dog's fullest potential!

What is 'poisoning a cue'?
Do you find yourself asking your dog to do something 5 times before they'll do it?
As humans, we like things to happen fast. We expect the internet to load instantly, and for our remote to work immediately.
When you repeat a cue over and over when your dog isn't doing what you asked, that poisons the cue.
Your dog learns that the cue doesn't mean anything, or that they don't have to do it until you ask them for the 17th time.
In this video, you'll see Oberon learning to 'touch.' On the last repetition, he hesitates because I held my hand further away than I had been.
Instead of repeating myself, I gave him verbal encouragement and waited for his brain to process what i was asking for. Once he does it, I reward him for a job well done!
Be patient with your training, and avoid poisoning a cue.

You've probably heard us talk about enrichment, and it is SO important for our dogs. Most dogs descend from breeds that had "jobs" and because many of our dogs not longer do traditional jobs we can enrich their lives with games like "find it".
This game involves setting up a bunch of items (we like to use cones, but you can use anything in your home that you feel is safe for your dog). You can then hide treats or your dog's kibble under (or concealed around) the items.
Here, we used Toby's entire dinner when we set up this course!
This game is a great alternative to walks for anxious dogs, reactive dogs, or older dogs. You can also set up more low key versions of this game for dogs who might be restricted on exercise for medical reasons.
Have you ever set up a sniffing obstacle course like this for your dog? Tell us about it in the comments!
You may see this video and wonder "why would you muzzle train a puppy?!".
While it may surprise most people, there are actually a LOT of good reasons to muzzle train a puppy!
-For puppies or dogs who may eat dangerous items off the ground, muzzles are great management tools.
-Because many dogs end up needing to be muzzled at one point or another in their lives, doing it early means you and your dog will be ready in the event that you need a muzzle.
-Muzzle training is a great "trick" to teach to provide mental stimulation.
-Muzzle training can help build confidence in shy dogs. Many people will ignore dogs in muzzles, helping shy dogs feel more comfortable.
