This is relatable. Cats are my kind of people! I love all the apathetic roommates I’ve been so very fortunate to share my home with over the years. Dogs are great, for sure. Cats are forever my passion. 😻

Many cats are fastidious about grooming, spending a significant amount of time and energy on their skin and coat care. Cats are naturally auto-(self) and allo(other cats)- groomers. Check out these helpful infographics from Catster.

When assisting with their coat maintenance, I recommend using a stainless steel comb, in addition to brushing. This can help locate and remove tangles and mats that may have formed throughout the coat, particularly along the sides and underbelly. Be sure to notice and respect your cat’s communication and preferences while grooming. It can be a wonderful way to bond with our feline friends.

Uh oh! 🙀 Bathing a cat is not an activity for the inexperienced. I can’t help but wonder what happened to this poor fella. Too bad he apparently didn’t know about holistic cat grooming. There are strategies, my friend, to keep everyone safe. I recommend Aunt Stacey’s Cats’ YouTube channel as one reference.

Going all the way back to 2002 with this photo of me and Kinser, a big ole sweetheart Maine C**n kitty cat. He taught me all about how loving these 'gentle giants' can be. He was such a cuddly fellow. I'm the luckiest to have been his groomer.

💚 Compassionate, holistic care is our responsibility. I’m always grateful when clients understand the importance of doing what’s in the cat’s best interest. Trust is created through safety and respect.

This is what transparency and honesty looks like in the animal industry when we tell you to give your pet X and return on Y so we can safely work with them OR offer heavier sedation that moment so we can address the issue. Your pet is your companion and we do care about them and their emotional and physical wellbeing.

Excellent advice! A cat’s carrier can and should be a space of security and comfort. Purrs!! 😻

It’s been said once or maybe thousand times, leave your cat carrier out 24/7/365 so it is safe and as benign as any other piece of furniture.

Place soft bedding inside, treats and scent enrichment to encourage use and exploration.

I use the carrier as part of our clicker training props so it is seen as “fun” and something they want and choose to engage with. I don’t even need to leave mine out due to this, they are anxious to get in once the see them.

Søren has a preventative care visit to the internist today. Can you believe he is TEN years old?!?! Got the carrier out this am, like a magnet, he entered it instantly! When it was time to leave, he was sound asleep inside, closed the door and we’re off!

These recommendations really work! Embrace them, implement them, make your life and theirs easier!

How To Shave a Cat's Tummy, with Aunt Stacey featuring Jai the Maine C**n

In this video, I demonstrates a tummy clip on Jai, a Maine C**n I began grooming when he was a kitten.

You might ask, "Why would you shave a cat's tummy?"

Health and comfort, of course!

A Tummy Clip may aid in the relief of these and other issues:

- Chronic hairballs
- Coat matting
- Sensitive stomach upset
- Obsessive auto-grooming
- Skin infections

Jai is NOT SEDATED. He's just awesome!

Many cats, like Jai featured in this video, comfortably accept being clipped.

However, not all cats are capable of the intimacy and vulnerability required of them for their coat to be safely shaved.

If the cat says “NO!”, then a behavior modification plan is implemented.

Counter conditioning using positive rewards, respectful handling, and patience help to earn the cat's trust and cooperation.

My sweet tabby cat, Shadey, joined our family over a decade ago as a foster failure. Her seemingly erratic behavior (which is actually totally appropriate for a cat) made it obvious why she had been given such a name.

Over time, we've gained her trust. She loves us and we love her. Shadey thoroughly enjoys being petted. So much so that she will drool excessively when the scratches and rubs are just right. BUT she does get overstimulated. We've had to learn to read and honor her cues so 1) we don't get bitten 2) her frustration doesn't escalate and 3) our bond strengthens.
