In my opinion, the crate is one of the most under-utilized tools for a happier, healthier, more mentally sound pup🐩

Pros to using a crate:

💫 Provides our dogs with a safe space to call their own. In the entirely human world they are living in, their own den is an invaluable gift. You can think of it as their bedroom!

💫 Serves as a safe place for them to rest while we are busy or away. For some dogs, their humans leaving is stressful, which can lead to anxious behaviors (pacing, panting, barking, whining, destructive behaviors). With proper crate usage, these behaviors will cease and they will create healthier self-soothing coping mechanisms

💫 Provides necessary boundaries. Boundaries are important in any relationship, our dogs are no different! Lack of boundaries can lead to co-dependency, anxious attachments, misunderstanding of roles in the household, etc.

💫 Offers forced down-time for our dogs to rest and recharge (very important, especially when training!) Dogs need a lot more rest than we do, and most misbehaved dogs are lacking the downtime they require

💫 A safe, comfortable space for them to eat and sleep, drastically decreasing the chances of resource guarding or separation anxiety

💫 an invaluable tool for potty training!!

What’s the ratio of structure you use with your dogs & more importantly, is it working?🤔

Let’s break this concept down. First, what do I mean by “ratio of structure”? By this, I mean the amount of time your dog is in a structured mindset (in place, on a focused walk, having some downtime in their crate) vs the amount of time they are in an unstructured mindset (roaming the house, making their own choices, acting on impulses)

Why is this important? When it comes to our dogs, it’s all about balance and patterns. If the normal pattern is they get to make all their own choices for 80% of the day, than they will likely struggle the 20% where you want them to listen compared to a 50/50 or even 60/40 ratio

Furthermore, if our dogs are acting on impulses for 80% of the day, than it’s unfair for us to expect them to reliably control impulses (reactivity, holding place/down, recalling from distractions) when we want them to because that is not a headspace they have patterned tapping in to

If you’re struggling with your dog, I suggest checking your ratio. Balance is key, and of course we want our dogs to have time to just be a dog. But if you want all the reliability that balanced training can offer, implementing some more structure is the key🔑

Congratulations Zoe, Mocha, Bagels, Mei Mei, Fredo, Truffles, Zion, Gauge, Enzo, and Marco on completing their training programs!

Despite varying in shapes, sizes, and temperaments, all these pups came to us with a similar goal in mind: to live a more structured and harmonious life with their families.

They are now equipped with all the necessary tools to do so💪🏼

PSA📣: Calm is a skill, NOT something your dog needs to run 5 miles to be able to do!

Just like any other skill, calm is one that we can teach our dog to do on command. With some time and practice, you can help your dog have an “off” switch, a tool that often comes in handy!🤩

Not only is a “calm on command” practice good for our dogs mental health, but it also helps add some necessary structure and down time into your day to day life👏🏼

Not to mention the helpfulness of an off switch when out in public with our pup! Enjoying dinner at a patio restaurant? Dog is relaxing nicely in a down. Hanging out at a winery? Dog is snoozing away in place. Needless to say, calm on command makes outings easier and more relaxing for everybody involved😊
