Look! A Mini Highland that's available for an incredibly low price, and they can deliver. What's wrong with this? First, it's a Highland calf, and not a Mini Highland. Second, see the ear tags? Unless you live in Europe it would be a bit difficult to deliver to you. Those tags are required in European countries. I'll do another post about ear tags and some things to watch out for later...

Myth: chondro carriers are micro minis

Fact: micro mini cattle must measure 36” or less to the hook of the hip at age 3 to classify as micro sized. Few chondro positive Dexters classify as micro miniatures.

The only way to predict that a chondro positive calf is likely to measure in as a micro mini at age 3 would be if:
1). The chondro positive parent is micro sized AND the non chondro parent is mini sized
2). Full siblings are micro sized at age 3
3). The breeder is consistently breeding micro sized chondro carriers and mini sized non chondro carriers.
4). The breeder has been breeding micro sized highlands for a number of years or the breeder purchased their stock exclusively from someone who has been breeding micro sized highlands consistently for a number of years.

*If micro size is important to you, determine how many micro sized highlands your breeder has produced and how long they have been producing micro sized highlands.

Myth: if my bovine tests negative for BD1, it cannot have a bulldog calf.

Fact: there are many types of chondrodysplasia and these types do not play well together. BD1 is one of TWO Dexter chondrodysplasia genes. BD2 is found exclusively in Australia and New Zealand.
Chondrodysplasia can be found in Hereford, Angus, Zebu, Brangus, and other breeds (in addition to crosses containing these breeds such as mini Jersey, mini Longhorn, etc). Each of these different breeds has its own form of chonfrodysplasia which will test Negative for BD1 (Dexter chondro).

Therefore, a bovine can test negative for the Dexter BD1 gene but still be positive for Angus or Hereford or Zebu or Brahma or… any other type of chondrodysplasia.

When this “other type of chondro positive” bovine is bred to a BD1 (Dexter chondro) carrier, the pairing can produce a non viable bulldog calf.

It is essential to know the genetic background of your cattle before breeding. Some forms of chondrodysplasia are dominant and some are recessive.

Opening the genetic door to all forms of chondrodysplasia will result in a future genetic testing nightmare for this breed.

Breed responsibly, test for all types of chondrodysplasia as needed, and above all, buy from those who breed responsibly. The future depends on everyone to do their part.

An Informational Post:
Dehorned, Horned, and Polled. Highlands are a long horned breed. As such, it is the breed standard to have horns. Dehorning is actually against breed standard. We do dehorn most of our mini Highlands because they will be pets. We have dehorned many of ours for years because we interact with our cattle so often. Highlands know exactly where their horns are and they are typically very careful around their owners with their horns. But many people are intimidated by the horns. Please note that if cattle want to hurt you, the do not need horns to do so. Even as miniatures, they are still very powerful and, like all livestock, they can be dangerous if not handled or raised or bred properly.

While adult Highlands can be dehorned, it is very messy and can be lethal for the bovine. The horn has ample blood supply. Done improperly and the bovine could hemorrhage. Dehorned as an adult and the dehorning process will leave a hole the size of the base of the horn in the skull. This hole will need to close without getting infected. Such dehorning should not be attempted during fly season or flies can lay eggs in the wound. We have never dehorned an adult Highland and would not. We do dehorn calves shortly after birth. The process is quick and calves act like normal as soon as we are finished. The dehorning does not take any after care and the procedure can be performed during fly season. There are several ways to dehorn a calf, with paste, the Barnes method, or with electric dehorners. We dehorn at the same time that we do BoSe shots, tag, and (in the case of our Dexters) pull tail hairs for DNA testing for registration. Poorly dehorned calves can have re-growth which would necessitate a second dehorning, typically with the Barnes method.

We do not do polled mini Highlands for several reasons. First, it is hard enough to breed for small, temperament, and conformation. Breeding for polled requires a cross to a polled breed and then repeated breeding back to full Highland to get back the look and hair of the Highland while retaining the polled gene which is dominant but will be heterozygous and when bred to a 100% Highland (which is homozygous for the horned gene) will produce 50% polled and 50% horned calves. Selection of the polled gene then becomes a "must-have" trait and better animals will be passed by in favor of a lesser animal with the polled gene. If you add breeding for chondro into the mix, you will have two "must-have" genes and your breeding choices will certainly be focused entirely on these two traits instead of other more important traits. Also, many people still want mini Highlands with horns...

In addition, the polled head has a point... The Highland face should have a wide forehead and ample dossen. The face should be broad. You can retain this look with a dehorned Highland but the polled head will give the animal a point to the top of the head and the broad forehead will be lost.

For us, the answer was easy. We decided to stick with the horned mini Highlands and dehorn calves if customers preferred. We have retained the option of having horned mini Highlands (we prefer the look of the horned minis) and offering any animal as horned or dehorned as the customer wishes. We also retained the broad forehead and ample dossen. And we can focus our efforts at creating the smallest 100% mini Highlands and getting our percentage mini Highland herd with the chondro gene as close to 100% as we can with the chondro gene as the only "must-have."

A really good breeder breeds exclusively for the most important criteria. This is especially important in a new or developing breed. There are essential characteristics and non essential characteristics. Essential characteristics include good temperament, good conformation, and in the case of mini highlands, small size. Non essential characteristics include things like color and polled and even crop ear.

An excellent breeder will focus breeding. Eventually, they will hone to a consistency in their calf crop and calves will be stamped with a consistency in look and performance.

This cow is an example of what we are breeding for. She is non chondro and 100% Highland. She is small and has a ton of hair. This is actually her summer coat. She has double crop ear but there are few cows out there as spectacular as she. Crop ear is something that can be more easily bred out than her other traits bred in. So, as we continue to develop and hone our breeding to produce the look and size and temperament and performance we seek, this fine cow has an important role in our breeding program. She has the round full face and short nose we strive for.

This calf is 47% highland 53% Dexter. Note the hair coat? While we use registered Dexters and often Traditional Dexters, which typically have a better double coat than modern horned or polled Dexters, when we create high dex calves, this is winter and coats will be thicker.

Use this reference when comparing coat at this time of year. If the calf has less coat, it is likely less highland. Some calves will be Heinz 57 crosses and short coat breeds will reduce hair quality significantly more than a cross to a traditional dexter.

Mini highlands are probably the most beloved cattle. But they are not a breed yet. They are far from it, and though their “numbers” have increased drastically over the last 6 years from about 200 in 2018 to many thousands now, this increase in number has not corresponded with a reduction in size nor a consistency in calf crop, rather the opposite is occurring. It’s literally worse than the Wild West out there with an “anything and everything goes mentality.

There are no short cuts in creating a new breed of cattle.

Shortcuts bring physical and genetic disease to the breed. Shortcuts bring large genetics into the small pool of truly miniature genetics and either kill or dilute the hard work originally invested.

There is no cheap way to create a new breed. You will either pay in time and in trial and significant errors or you will need to pay someone who has worked through the setbacks and has earned success.

I know several standard highland breeders who just added a chondro bull to the herd. This only produces standard genetic dwarfs. These animals will have standard sized bodies on tiny legs. They will break down. And it floods the breed with standard highland genetics. This further dilutes the true mini genetics. This takes the development of the mini highland as a breed back to step 1 or worse. By creating calves that are too large and heavy for tiny legs and joints, this ruins the reputation of both the mini highlands and of the chondro gene, which when bred responsibly, produces amazing quality cattle.

This beloved breed needs caretakers who will protect it against those who seek to exploit it by putting fast profit above the breed and customers and individual animals.

Sheril and I began our breeding program 20 years ago with the goal of producing a herd of waist high highland cows. We were breeding for our own pleasure, and as such, we did not cut corners. We kept our calves so we could determine what pairings were successful and which were not. We doubled down on successes and culled what did not work. Progress was slow for many years, but the longer we have stayed focused, the more and bigger our jumps in progress have become and the more consistency we have seen with our results.

At times we get discouraged and feel like just selling out and washing our hands of it all, rather than continue to fight the uphill battle to create a solid foundation for this breed, but we’ve met quite a few like minded people who appreciate our dedication.

Registered Full Blood Miniature Galloway Cow with Steer Calf At Foot

Nougat is likely back in calf to Galloway Magic Quigley (ACT Q9) 01/2023.

Byron Bay Nougat is a beautiful white and dun point miniature galloway standing at 117cm at maturity (which is 5 years of age, as per Galloways Australia). We have agonised over the decision to sell her. She produces beautiful calves and has calved with ease twice in 11 months. Nougat will not come in for a bucket of treats like the rest of our cows. Due to the sloping nature of our property and arrangement of our new cattle yard since moving to higher ground this is a necessity for us. She is not aggressive and behaves in the crush, but is no longer easy to manage here and we have made the regretful decision to sell.

Tron was born 7/11/2022. He is a beautiful animal but is a bit timid. He has potential to become well mannered after weaning with dedication as his older sister did, but he will take work. We will be selling him as a steer. Buyer has potential to halter train and sell Tron post weaning in 4-6 months, regaining some of the purchase price.

Nougat also gave us Mountain MiniMoo Snookie, born 10/2021. Snookie is a heifer we have retained for future breeding and has a very friendly demeanour, which developed after weaning with training and time.
