Case of the month- Chai!
Meet Chai, a 6 year old Goldendoodle and retired breeding dog who is the biggest love bug! For the past year, Chai had recurrent UTIs to the point where she could barely hold her bladder. We took X-ray images which showed a huge stone taking up almost her entire bladder. Two days later she came in for surgery where I was able to remove the largest bladder stone I’ve seen in my career- the size and weight of a chicken egg! i joked that she was so good at having puppies that she wanted to see if she could lay an egg! 🐣 Chai started feeling immediately better after surgery and we had the stone analyzed to ensure she was on a longterm diet to prevent future stones. She’s continuing to do well at home and is back to her normal self!

Say Beau-njour to Beau! I was so happy to care for Beau for his first exam today. Beau joins his family after a rough year- his family’s previous Samoyed, Bruno, who was absolutely beloved in our hospital, passed away suddenly and tragically at a year old at the end of this past year. While we were all devastated, fate works in funny ways and his parents had an accidental last litter resulting in a full brother to fill his shoes. I look forward to many happy visits with Beau- he’s already lucky to have found his family!

Being a vet in the classroom- yesterday I had the opportunity to talk to my child’s preschool class about being a veterinarian! All week they’ve been learning about community helpers and yesterday was veterinarian day. After showing photos of my job and explaining what I do, I then did a project with the kids where we bandaged their stuffed animals’ broken legs and made them cones so they wouldn’t bite at their casts! The kids had a great time and so did I- I deemed them all junior veterinarians for the day!

Meet Tina, the patient of the week!

Tina is a 6-7 month old kitten who was found outside 3 weeks ago by one of our staff members’ grandmothers. She located the original owner who refused to take Tina back. Wanting to get her healthy, Tina’s new owner wanted to spay her but noticed an increasingly large belly and was told by a local rescue that Tina was pregnant.

When Tina’s belly kept expanding with no mammary development, they brought Tina in to see me. Tina was not in fact pregnant but actually had a life threatening condition called a pyometra where her uterus was filled with pus. We were able to get Tina in to surgery where we removed her 3/4lb uterus- almost 10% of Tina’s weight!

Tina did great for surgery and is recovering well! Thank you to her new owners for seeing life saving medical attention for her and we wish her a wonderful full life going forward. Just another reason to spay your female dogs and cats!

Happy Veterinary Technician Appreciation Week!

I’m so grateful to work with a group of such talented and compassionate technicians! Vet techs really keep our practice going- from triaging, administering vaccines, and collecting lab samples to taking x-rays, monitoring anesthesia, cleaning teeth, and loving on your pet in their most vulnerable times. These are just a few of their roles!

Please join me in thanking and recognizing all veterinary technicians!
