Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf - A conversation with director Terry McGovern. Performances through Oct. 24 at Belrose Theatre in San Rafael.
Terry McGovern talks about his work directing the 2015 theater adaptation of the Edward Albee play "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf".
"...a superb production...Produced by Ken Bacon and directed by Terry McGovern...Marin Actors Workshop production, which lifts the comedy to the laugh-yourself-sick level but honors the dysfunctional marriage of George and Martha as an authentic and enduring love affair. In its uniquely twisted way, 'Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?' is a real love story." ~ Barry Willis, Marin Independent Journal / Member SFBATCC
The years following World War II were a halcyon period for the United States. Compared with the combatant nations of Europe, we emerged relatively unscathed, with no damage to our infrastructure, and a robust industrial economy. It was a time of
"Ken Bacon’s abbreviated production at...Belrose Theatre in San Rafael, ' Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf ' is astutely directed by Terry McGovern from a script adapted by Ernest Lehman...This talented cast more than meets the demands of the script without overdoing it or becoming caricatures. Timing, reaction, and deep understanding of the character one is playing must be spot on, which, thankfully, Mc Govern’s cast delivers."

" 'Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf' - Producer Ken Bacon and Director Terry McGovern team to bring this classic to San Rafael’s intimate Belrose Theater....an entertaining evening that offers much more comic relief than the story line would suggest. Those unfamiliar with the work will enjoy an honest and provocative rendering, and those who know it already will experience a worthwhile revisit." ~ Victor Cordell, Member SFBATCC
“Truth and illusion, George – you don’t know the difference.” “No [Martha], but we must carry on as though we did.” “Amen!” And so it is, that the angst of two couples’ lives derive from self-deception in Edward Albee’s darkly comic masterpiece, “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf”. Producer Ken Bacon a…

Marin Actors' Workshop (with Ken Bacon Productions and Marin OnStage) present WHAT: "True West" By Sam Shepard Mom's away and the boys will play. Two adult brothers, opposite in philosophy and personality, take their rivalry to another level in Sam Shepard's dark comedy "True West." Sharp barbs and quick fire dialog bring this story to its ultimate showdown when Austin and Lee come together after years of estrangement and reveal their true nature and "brotherhood" amid typewriters and toasters. The brothers represent two sides of the American west ~ one is sophisticated, cultured, ambitious and successful, while the other is alienated, outcast, raw, and violent. When they exchange places, the brothers reveal that each is the double of the other. "True West" emphasizes that, despite the American belief in starting anew, the past is never over but continues to intrude into the present. Family dysfunction, sibling rivalry and role reversal make this one of Sam Shepard's most popular plays and demonstrates why he is considered one of America's prolific modern playwrights. This production of "True West" continues the Marin Actors' Workshop annual tradition of critically acclaimed plays including "Petrified Forest" in 2011 and "Humble Boy" in 2010. Directed by Terry McGovern A San Francisco Bay Area Theatre Critics' Circle 2010 award-winning director for Marin Actors' Workshop's production of "Humble Boy." For mature audiences only. This dark comedy features violence, strong language and is not recommended for audiences under 14-years old.
