Many people have seen the news reports about the "new" respiratory illness affecting dogs around the country, and many of our clients have questions about it. It is thought to have first been seen in the Pacific Northwest and has since been suspected in cases across the country. Currently veterinary scientists and diagnostic labs are working to identify the cause, but we do not know exactly what the infectious agent is. Case reports tell us that it presents in the same manner as other common respiratory infections that we see every day but does not respond well to routine treatments and antibiotics.

Symptoms of the disease can include:

Coughing
Sneezing
Nasal/ocular discharge
Lethargy in your dog

To decrease the risk of exposure to your pet, it is recommended to limit exposure to other dogs in public areas. Do not let your dog drink from communal water bowls, and make sure your pet is current on all major respiratory vaccinations, including Bordetella and Influenza.

If your dog has any of the above clinical signs, contact us to have them evaluated and start treatment if appropriate. DO NOT just assume it is "Kennel Cough" or that it will pass.

Call anytime to schedule an appointment to have your pet vaccinated or if you have any concerns related to your pet. We carry the Canine Influenza vaccine and want to help you keep your pets happy and healthy all year long.

Thank you for your service.

Happy cats = healthy cats. During Happy Cat Month we want to promote the health (as well as the happy) aspect of living with felines. It’s startling to know that cats are taken to veterinarians for check ups far less often than dogs are. If you live with a cat, make certain he or she is happy, healthy and vetted to assure a long, healthy and happy life!🐈‍⬛🐈

Skin allergies can get in the way of everyday activities, ultimately affecting the relationship between pets, their owners and veterinarians. To prevent this from happening, you should look for common signs of skin allergies such as excessive licking, chewing, biting or scratching, foot chewing, hair loss, recurrent ear problems, redness of skin, body odor, and more before meeting with their veterinarian. By observing and reporting these types of behaviors and skin changes, this can help establish a diagnosis and the best treatment option available at the time of visit.

Microchips make it possible to reunite lost pets with their owners.
Tags and collars can break or get lost - which is why it's so important to get your pet microchipped!

But how do these devices work?

A pet microchip is a tiny tag, about as big as a grain of rice, that stores an ID number.

They don’t have a battery or source of power - just a chip, an antenna, and a “capacitor” which allows an external device to power the chip when read.

A vet or a shelter can use an "interrogator device" to give the chip energy, which the chip uses to emit its unique ID number.

This number can be used to look up your pet in a lost pets database - and reunite them with you!
