The countdown to the first day of summer begins this weekend! Are you ready for it? Maybe you are getting jazzed with a few activities this weekend, so don't forget to be mindful of your companion pets.

If you're throwing a bbq be careful of grill proximity to your pet's reach, watch for foods that are tasty for you but toxic for your animal buddy.

If at the pool, or lake, or river, flotation devices are your best friend's friend.

Travelling? Avoid overheating in cars. That temperature can rise lickity split and put your pals in serious stress and danger. Also be mindful of loose items your friend could accidentally ingest or destroy when you are "just superfast popping in" to a favorite stop.

Check out this classic article from the ASPCA for more thoughts on the approach of summertime fun.

And by all means enjoy the approaching holiday and season, safely!

Have you seen 'em? We bet you have. Foxtail season is in full bloom and they are itching for hitching a ride on your companion animal with ill intent.

They tend to grow in untended areas of grass along trails, in yards, fields, ditches, woodlands, parking lots.....they are everywhere!

Best to avoid otherwise they can get stuck in the fur of your companion's belly or legs, between the toes, in the ears, the nose or the even the eyes. And if your pup (especially) has a proclivity for eating grass they could be accidentally ingested.

They are a dickens to remove as the longer they linger the further they can burrow INTO the flesh of the animal they are casually hanging with. Thier barbs make for an extremely painful and irritating visitation as well as a costly removal once they get in too deep.

Below is a handy quick read from PetMD regarding these boogers. Please read!

Hey everyone! Let's talk about hot dogs! Not the mustard covered ones.
The other kind.

So it's going to be HOT for the next few days! Remember that the pavement is going to be hotter than you may realize so keep all contact with paws to a minimum.

Maybe keep the length of play outside a little shorter than usual.

And always be prepared with water close at hand.

Leave your dogs at home, no dogs in hot cars even for "just a moment". It's far more dangerous than you realize.

And to the point...those short nosed doggos are going to need extra attention. It's very difficult for them to regulate their temperature so keep them cool as cucumbers most especially.

We want to take a moment on this beautiful day to remember someone very special to us that took that wildflower laden hike over the rainbow bridge earlier this year.

This is Roco and he IS the goodest of boys and handsomest of old man dogs, a true patron to doghood and companionship.

A handful of our staff had the august honor to call him their true friend and the opportunity to care for him from time to time. Be sure that those moments are still cherished and continue to be a balm for the soul.

It is a bittersweet notion, but we are certain that Roco has reunited with the friends that went before him on the other side of that eternal bridge and he will be happy beyond happy to be reunited with those he preceded.

You are missed and you are loved Roco! Now go play! ❤️

Just a quick positive paws-icure.
Sometimes you gotta go the distance and get down in there.

This old girl was a little uncomfortable with certain positions of her paw being moved/touched and was a bit hesitant/reluctant to sit still for her nail trim.

To accommodate her comfort we made sure to move her to a soft mat where her feet would have a bit more traction, gave her cuddles (gentle restraint for safety) and figured out some innovative ways we could trim her nails without having to move her paws too much in any odd directions.

We all know toenail trims can be a bit of a challenge for some. Always remember....don't force it, go at your animal's comfortable pace and try a little bit of innovation with your approach; maybe a lick mat for distraction or a light Dremel action instead of clippers.

The path to acclimating for a successful trim can be long but so worth the effort.

April is National Pet First Aid Awareness Month!

Ask yourself if know what to do in the event of discovering that your pet is choking on an object, having a seizure, or what if your pet fell and was now limping?

It's always important to be cognizant and aware of what to do in these situations, but most importantly....to remain calm and prepared.

Here are a few tips and reminders on various situations.

Also.... The organization CPR Seattle conducts a thorough pet first aid class. In the span of a few hours they can teach you how to restrain, check vitals, dress wounds, and perform CPR! Give them your consideration. It's very much worth it.

Let's talk about teeth! We were really busy getting some good time in on these chompers during February, aka National Pet Dental Health Month.

When we check your pet's dental health at their annual wellness exams we can make recommendations on frequency of professional cleanings at that time.

Our dental procedures are not simple or basic in any way. We call them Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT) for a reason. We take full mouth dental radiographs to detect disease below the gum line. We also do a detailed exam of the whole mouth to check for pocketing of the gums, gingivitis, fractures, etc. This exam can also find other abnormalities in the mouth (oral masses, cleft palates, etc.). Then we also clean all sides of the teeth, including just below the gum line. Lastly, we polish the teeth to smooth the tooth's surface in an effort to minimize tartar buildup following the cleaning.

Check out these photos and see for yourself the difference a quality and caring dental procedure can make.

What's that smell?!? That my friend is the aroma of Anosmia Awareness Day. If you can smell it (or anything!) take a moment to appreciate your smellers. Smelling powers are important for the enjoyment of things we rely on (food!), or that we may take for granted (puppy breath!) or as a precursor to danger (a beast in the forest!). Explore your world today and all the smells within.

The Super Bowl times are here! And it's probably going to be just about as cray cray as this illustration predicts. Fried foods everywhere and all the four legged kiddos ready to receive the food fumbles. So beware! There are some serious dangers inherent in sharing celebration snacks (either on purpose or accidentally) with your pets. Much like the holidays (we see you Valentine's Day and chocolates) be mindful of any foods your pets may accidentally ingest! Chicken wing bones! Fried foods! All those spicey sauces! Onion Rings! If things do go awry and you need poison clarification the number to the ASPCA Poison Control Line is (888) 426-4435. And if you need to call a time out to get to the animal ER.....do not hesitate! Everyone have a safe final football game show and.......😏..........Go Chiefs!

Here's Barkley and Buster checking in and connecting with you on this Hi! How Are You? day. It's very important to check in with those that you love and with yourself everyday, every single day. But if there's someone that you haven't checked in with, connected with, for quite some time now......it's time to do that.
