VVC Service Spotlight- September

For September, we are spotlighting our lung ultrasound services! Pneumonia in a young heifer has long lasting effects on her future health and production.

With ultrasound, our veterinarians are able to detect the earliest traces of pneumonia in calves. By identifying sick calves earlier, we can enable better treatment response and prevent calves from developing chronic pneumonia.

Lung ultrasound is a very flexible tool. Some of our farms ask us to scan every calf. Others have us scan periodically to help them fine tune their vaccination protocols or nutrition plan. We can work with any type of calf housing, and routinely scan in hutches, in individual pens or in group pens.

If you’re interested in keeping heifers healthy and helping them reach their maximum production potential, ask your VVC veterinarian about lung ultrasound today!

Cady, our summer intern, just wrapped up her time with us by presenting on the research project she had been working on the last few months. Her focus was comparing mastitis rates and somatic cell counts on a dozen herds bedding with Recycled Manure Solids, using many different processing techniques.

We found that farms using many different systems can be successful, but those with the best udder health had slow, deliberate transitions from sand to RMS, and had owners/managers who were dialed into parlor management.

Thanks for your hard work this summer, Cady! It was a pleasure having you around.

And if you are bedding or considering bedding with RMS, talk to your VVC veterinarian about how to manage for superb udder health.

Introducing VVC Service Spotlight! Every month we will spotlight an area of service we provide for our clients! Our team of veterinarians have a wide range of interests and training in several areas of dairy – ranging from calf management, nutrition, ventilation and barn design, milk quality, records analysis, Spanish translating, and more! Want more out of your operation? Talk to your herd veterinarian, or anyone at VVC, to learn more about how we can help you reach your goals!

This month we’re highlighting our Genetics Team and our IVF service. Ever look at a fresh heifer that’s really taking off and think ‘Wish I had a barn full of her’? Now you can! IVF or In-Vitro Fertilization allows you to fill your herd with calves out of your very best cows. Our trained veterinarians and staff make the process simple and easy. The whole process takes place on your farm, with minimal disruption. IVF allows us to collect any animal from young heifers to pregnant cows. If you’re interested in taking your herd’s potential to the next level, talk to your herd veterinarian to learn more about IVF.

Reminder: If you are planning to take lactating cows to the Outagamie County Fair next week, please get in touch with us to arrange sample collection for Bovine Influenza A (H5N1) testing. Samples must be collected within 7 days of travel to the fair, and must be taken either by or under the supervision of a veterinarian. Tests are run at the Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Lab on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. That means for Wednesday entry, we need to have samples collected and shipped the week prior. It’s best to plan ahead to make sure your fair season goes as planned!

As always, if you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact us at (920) 833-6833.

06/12/2024

DATCP has announced new testing requirements meant to control the spread of H5N1. Beginning June 19, all lactating dairy cows need to test negative for H5N1 on a milk test within seven days before movement to a fair or exhibition. The milk sample must be collected by a veterinarian.

Contact VVC or your herd veterinarian to make a plan for testing sooner rather than later. It can take several days for us to receive the results from the laboratory.

Our own Dr. Jon Garber was recently interviewed by WPR regarding last year's FDA rule changes, which brought all medically important antibiotics used in animals under veterinary oversight.

Good communication and a strong working relationship between producers and veterinarians meant that for most of our dairies, the transition was smooth and painless.

If you've been by our Seymour office in the last few weeks, you might've seen our new mascot! Kudos to our team members who put in a lot of work to get her painted and pretty. She looks so good, we might take her down to Expo this year!

She also provides the very valuable service of letting passers-by know that we are a cattle clinic and don't see pets.

Dr. Jack Hansen, our own in-house dairycomp master, was interviewed for this story about how he utilizes data to help clients identify and solve problems.

Thirty years ago, Steve Eicker, DairyComp co-founder, said whoever has access to the data and knows what to do with it holds the keys. 🔑🐄 This wisdom remains as relevant today as it was then.

Dr. Jack Hansen, a veterinarian with 45 years of experience at Valley Veterinary Clinic in Northeast Wisconsin, lives by this principle, crediting his success to effectively interacting with his clients’ data. 📊 We recently sat down with Dr. Hansen to delve into his insights on how dairy consultants can leverage herd management tools to deliver greater value to their farms. Dig into his recommendations here: https://ow.ly/qVsP50RnETl

After reading Dr. Hansen’s tips, how will you leverage data to empower your clients? ⬇️ Share your thoughts below.
