Update: Tango and Disco have found their new families! ChaCha and Lily are still available and waiting anxiously to meet their new best friends! 🐾

How cute are these babies!! 😻

These are a few of the kittens available for adoption through pound pals downriver.
They have been with their foster family since they were 10 days old. They are currently 13 weeks old and ready for their forever homes!
They have been FeLV/FIV tested negative, had their first set of vaccines, and have been spayed/neutered.

They are super playful and affectionate. They have full run of their foster’s house and all play well with their adult cats. They do well with their dogs too. And most importantly they are all ADORABLE and so ready to meet their new family!

If you are interested in adopting one of these angels reach out to WACShelter.com for adoption info.

Names in blue are male. Names in pink are female.

‼️ Shockingly, 1 in 5 dogs go missing after being scared by fireworks. More dogs go missing on the 4th of July than any other day of the year because the loud noises can scare even the bravest dog! ‼️

‼️🚨 REMINDER: if your dog uses a prescription medication for anxiety or noise aversion caused by storms, fireworks, etc.- call in those refills NOW!
We usually cannot accommodate same day medication refills and require a 24 hour notice.
Please do not wait til the last minute to refill your pets medications. Having the time, staff, and stock available to fill your pets prescription is very important to us, and we would hate for your pet to not have these things in time!

Also- if your pet is NOT microchipped- consider scheduling an appointment to have that done and make sure to REGISTER your information!

The best way to be able to enjoy the holiday with family and friends, is being prepared against an unfortunate event.
Let’s make sure your fur babies are protected, and have a safe and happy holiday! 🎇

“Dedicated pet parents understand the importance of taking the best possible care of their furry family members. Unfortunately, the demanding schedules and frequent distractions that are such a common part of modern life can make it a challenge to keep track of your pet’s daily care routine. By creating a daily care checklist for your small pets, you can ensure your fur babies’ daily needs are met while also establishing an stress-limiting routine for all members of the household.”

The checklist included is a very handy tool to have as a reminder of their daily needs, and can be used as a great tool to teach your young ones the responsibility of owning a pet! ✅

☀️ These temps this week are going to be brutal!

Please remember your canine friend is usually more sensitive to these elevated temperatures than you might be (ESPECIALLY short nosed breeds) , and extreme caution should be taken when exposing them to the elements. 🐾

12/18/2022

Let's talk about heartworm disease as we enter winter weather. It may seem like a weird time to discuss this but please bear with me and you'll see why this is a concern year round! Did you know that heartworms are spread by mosquitoes? Did you know that it takes 4-6 months AFTER exposure for a dog to test positive? Did you know that heartworm disease is prevalent in Michigan and we can see up to 25 cases per clinic per year? Did you know the worms live in the heart and arteries of the lungs and can cause permanent damage to those organs?

The treatment for heartworm disease is costly and has the potential to cause severe side effects to your pet as well! Monthly preventatives administered year round (or the 6/12 month injectable) is key to protecting your dog from this disease, as well as yearly heartworm checks- and honestly it is less expensive to prevent a disease than it is to treat!

I'd like to share with you the story of Mr. Luger. He is an ~ 2 year old shepherd mix found wandering the streets in April when a good samaritan took him into the local shelter. I was lucky enough to be the doc that evaluated and treated him for injuries to his leg. After his stray hold was up, my husband and I decided to adopt him. Luger tested negative for heartworm, was administered ProHeart 6 (the injectable 6 month preventative) and was brought home to be the 3rd four legged member of our family. Since his past was unknown, a heartworm test was repeated 6 months later in September and he unfortunately ended up testing positive. That means Luger was bitten by a mosquito carrying the disease between Nov 2021 to April 2022, prior to being found on the streets, and during the time of year when many people stop administering heartworm prevention to their pet because it's "not mosquito season".

Luger's heartworm treatment consists of 30 days of antibiotics followed by 3 intramuscular injections of melarsomine (an arsenic-based medication that kills the adult worms) administered over 30 days, and an additional treatment of oral ivermectin to kill the microfilaria (circulating "baby" heartworms). During this time he is at risk of throwing clots of dead heartworms (called an embolism) to his lungs and other organs, as well as side effects to the medications. He will need weekly recheck exams to listen to his heart and lungs, be monitored closely for coughing, changes in appetite, vomiting, breathing issues, and he must be on strict cage rest to help reduce the risk of embolism for 2-4 months. This means no hikes, neighborhood walks, or playing with his 2 dog brothers! Luger can test positive for heartworm for up to 1yr as his body clears the parasite. In some cases, the worms can be resistant (meaning he continues to test positive 1 yr after treatment) and will require an additional round of 2 intramuscular injections, rechecks, and of course, strict cage rest- this is going to be a very long road for a very active, energetic, dorky, young shepherd; one that could have been prevented by his previous owners.

Monthly heartworm prevention is over 95% effective at preventing this disease from disrupting your dogs quality of life as well as yours! So when we recommend heartworm testing and a monthly prevention- it is to save you and your dog from enduring the journey that Luger and hundreds of other dogs are currently going through. Give your dog the gift of protection this holiday season and keep them on heartworm prevention year round! Please feel free to call us if you need help deciding on which prevention works best for you and your pet and to schedule a heartworm test!
Happy holidays! Carlie Trabulsy, DVM
