Puppies usually open their eyes between 10 and 14 days after birth, but it can vary by breed and may take as long as 21 days. Puppies keep their eyes closed until their central nervous system and eyes are fully developed, and their optical nerves are no longer sensitive to light. Keeping their eyes closed also protects their nerves and membranes from dirt.
Puppies may open their eyes one at a time over a few days, or both eyes at the same time. Even after opening their eyes, puppies won't have clear vision right away. As their eye nerves continue to develop, their eyesight will improve over the next few weeks, and they should be able to see fully by around eight weeks of age
