Children are often tasked as animal caregivers, so we have developed resources and materials such as our children’s coloring book to teach basic concepts in animal treatment and husbandry. Working with the local children allows us to make a lasting impact on sustained animal welfare practices all over the world.
Equitarian Initiative delivers continuing education, hands-on field training, and multi-lingual experiences for the students and professionals who attend our international programs.
Board member Dr. David Turoff explains the challenges and achievements we've had to go through based on his experience as an attendee and leader in approximately 50 trips to Guatemala, Nicaragua, Peru, Mexico, and the Philippines.

Worksites are a string of villages along Peten Region which constitutes the (disputed) border between Guatemala and Belize. Patients are predominantly horses used under saddle in agriculture, cattle herding, and for general transportation, with some pack and draft animals. Collaborating organizations included World Horse Welfare and their local entity Sabesa Guatemala
Some memories from out last project in Mexico.
We travel all around The Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, located in the State of Queretaro in northern Mexico, In 2003, an archeological site in the area was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
There is a big working equid population since agriculture, livestock raising, forestry and fishing are the Biosphere Reserve's main economic activites. Fruit and coffee production, for instance, is a big source of revenues for the region.
Our next project in Costa Rica is around the corner! In two weeks, we will be at the Osa Peninsula, helping hundreds of working horses, mules, and donkeys and providing education to communities and local veterinary students. STAY TUNE to join us through our social media.

Our Board President Judy Batker leading the PINE RIDGE project supported by THE FOUNDATION OF THE HORSE.
Pine Ridge is a Native American reservation community in western South Dakota with a long history of using horses in cultural, work, and recreational activities. Several tribal elders who welcome and host the veterinary teams each summer also run an organization that pairs horses with youth for learning horsemanship and partaking in cultural rides. In this spirit, the elders have shared some topics they would like youth (and adults) to learn about horse care. Annually, we coordinate “Doctoring your Horse” day of learning and sharing information for all ages just prior to the veterinary work week lead by Dr. Judy Batker. Here, we teach the native Americans suturing, wound care and injections. A typical project consists of 4-6 veterinarians and 10 veterinary students work on 450-650 horses. We perform castrations, dentals, deworming, vaccines and wound care/lameness.
