Just a friendly reminder that ticks seem extra terrible this year. We strongly recommend grooming at least every other day. Tick born illness is horrible to see our four legged friends go through. On top of that fly season is just about here. If you would like us to take care of grooming or these pests for you please let us know. You could add the extra services to your board or make a separate payment. Thank you and breathe easy. ❤🐎❤

Have you thought about quitting your day job to train and sell horses? Here are ten, no make that eleven, good reasons to reconsider that career change.

1. Your weekends will be shot.

It seems like the majority of the horse-buying world’s population works Monday through Friday. That means the only time people can shop for a horse is on the weekends. No more weekend plans for you with your family and friends. And they usually call at 5pm Saturday night as your headed out the door to dinner, for the first time all week not smelling of manure with shavings in your hair. Might as well get a restaurant job instead, because if you’re going to work on the weekend, at least you’ll have a steady source of income and be able to score free meals.

2. No matter how many good horses you sell, people will always remember you for that ONE incident when they came to see a horse. You know the time, they rolled in the mud with the saddle or suddenly got terrified of the fly spray bottle they see daily.

What’s the first thing you think of when you hear the name Bill Clinton? I can almost guarantee it’s not how he ran our country.

3. You will always end up with that one horse who stays skinny and lame no matter what you do.

No one wants a lame bag of bones — you won’t even be able to give him away and the client who sent him to you, will always claim, to be innocent and they don't think he's skinny...as you count every rib. You will be stuck with him until you give up and pour hundreds of dollars of your own money into said horse. And the seller will always think it looks fine, he's just fit....BS, he's skinny lady and it’s cost me tons in supplements to get him looking better. Or better yet the one that sends the horse, lame, injured or sick. She’s always sound the owner says as you and the shipper look at its recent cuts, wounds and bowed tendon. Yeah right?!

4. Everyone already “knows” how to ride.

That is, until they get to your place and fall off. But in court they’ll cry to the judge that they were bucked off and your horse was crazy. They seem to forget that you all but refused to let them try the horse and you told them not to lope it and ask for a rollback. It rolled back, they didn't.

5. People love to buy for color.

Yes, you might have the perfect bay-colored gelding for their son, but they insist on the flashy paint stallion that is 15 years old and still won’t let the vet close enough to be gelded.

6. People will use you as an opportunity to get in a free ride.

Of course they’re interested in Pancho the Wonder Horse: it’s 70 degrees, sunny and a Saturday. You brought your whole family in shorts and flip flops? Maybe the horse trailer is hidden behind your mini van? After your whole family got in a ride, you’re going to go home and think it over and promise to call us right back? Let me hold my breath.....

7. People will be forever tied to you.

And if they love the horse they bought, they'll drop you a note or call or text maybe once a year, if you’re lucky but if for some reason the are not happy, they'll be sure to post it on ever social media site there is, AND never even attempt to call you and ask for help.

8. You will cringe every time the phone rings on a holiday or vacation.

Do you answer it, even though it's Christmas Day? One part says, Heck no, the other says, well some don't celebrate Christmas and if you don't answer the phone, they will call on the next horse, so you answer it.........and yes, ask my family, I really have answered buyer calls on Christmas from buyers and sold horses on it too.

9. People will ask all the questions you’ve already answered explicitly in the ad.

“Offered for sale: 16h chestnut Thoroughbred gelding.” “How tall is he and what color is he?” 🤦‍♀️

10. People will be your best friend and recommend you to everyone, until their horse is not perfect.

Until the horse does something horse-like, ya know, like trip or roll in mud or snort at a butterfly and then the whole world will know how horrible a person you are but they still will never call you direct, after all that would be too easy.

11. Almost every horse you have for sale will stay sound and blemish free until the morning the potential buyer is out to look at them.

It’s a law of physics. What’s up must eventually go down. What’s sound must eventually go lame. What’s clean will definitely get dirty.

Honestly, I love my job, it’s a blessing, but there are days slinging coffee at Starbucks sounds rather tempting 😉.

**I seriously can not believe I am having to say this, but….for heaven sakes, of course I didn’t force the horse in the photo to lay down in a mud puddle. And no, that’s not it’s pen. She happened to LOVE water and when turned out would run to any puddle or my pond to roll. She was NOT forced to lay in it, roll in it or even walk through it. She’s a horse, I can’t control where she rolls when turned out in my round pen, she likes water, she likes mud, she rolled in a puddle, she’s not abused or being punished 🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️. And yes she was toweled off and blanketed with a cooler until dry afterwards.

Why can't it just rain during the day so the horses see it rain and maybe understand just how terrible the mud may be in...

How cold is too cold to ride?

Let’s start with your horse’s respiratory tract. The horse’s respiratory tract is designed to warm and humidify air by the time air reaches the lungs. Intense exercise (anything more than a walk) speeds up and deepens breaths so that air is not as warm or humid when it reaches the lungs which can cause damage to the lower respiratory tracts. It has been discovered in multiple studies that respiratory tracts in horses can become damaged by breathing cold air starting around 23 degrees Fahrenheit, damage to lower respiratory tracts was found 48 hours after exercise, including elevated white blood cell counts and inflammatory proteins as well as narrowing of the tracts.

Moving on to your horse’s cardiovascular system (heart). The cardiovascular system react to cold by increasing the blood pressure and heart rate. It also reduces the amount of blood that flows closest to the skin in order to preserve core body temperature. The reduced blood flow to the skin can lead to frostbite. This lack of blood leads to the eventual freezing and death of skin tissue in the affected areas. Again, it is probably wise to reduce the intensity of your ride so that your horse’s heart does not have to work so hard.

And last but not least your horse’s muscles and joints. Muscles take longer to warm up in the cold weather and arthritic joints may ache and need more time to loosen up. During exercise in the cold, your horse’s muscles require more energy at a faster rate in order for them to function as they would under less extreme conditions. The cold temperature effects the temperature of your horse’s muscles greatly affecting the muscles’ ability to contract. This can leave muscles more vulnerable to fatigue and strains, as cold muscles are less elastic and don’t absorb shock or impact as well as warm muscles. Cold muscles are also less responsive to signals from the nervous system so movements are less coordinated.

So in conclusion it is best to avoid exercise (trotting, cantering and jumping) when temperatures are under 20 degrees F, stick with walking and make sure to properly cool your horse down.

What a mess but we should be all plowed out now. Some clean up still.. Please keep in mind that if your vehicle is not good in the snow our long driveway will be a challenge. That was some storm! Hope all is well with you all!

01/29/2022

So far we have not had to fire up the generator. It's pretty brutal out there..but inside are 31 happy warm munching horses with tippy topped off water buckets. Once the snow stops coming down sideways we'll be out there cleaning it up. We'll post again when it's safe to come ❤️

01/17/2022

We are back in business!Power is restored. Limbs and branches are cleared from the driveway. Please be careful it's still very very windy!

01/17/2022

Just a heads up, we currently have no power. Everything is fine otherwise. It should be restored by noon.

01/15/2022

Dress warmly! We are planning on later shorter turnout.

01/07/2022

We should be all good to go here! Still please watch your step 🙏❤️

01/07/2022

Good morning! We will hopefully be all set and have the snow cleaned up to open later this afternoon. Please allow us time to thoroughly do so. Thanks be safe ❤️

Merry Christmas!!!
The farm will be closing at noon ❤️🎄❤️

11/25/2021

Happy Thanksgiving! Just a friendly reminder we are closed at noon today. The horses will have all 6 feedings. Maybe a little extra ❤️ Thank you enjoy ❤️

10/28/2021

Turning out our horses around 10:00. Wind damage was not to bad. Just some minor fence repairs. Still a bit muddy but all in all we fared very well! Didn't even have to turn on the generator.. Hope the same luck for you all!

10/27/2021

We lost power at the farm for a few hours. It's back on now. Horses are in safe and munching.

Let your child have a bad ride.
I know you want to protect them from the hardships of this world.
I know you want to give them success and good experiences.
I know you don't want to see them get hurt. To see them fall. To see them fail.
But, hear me out, let your child have a bad ride.

Let them cry the tears of frustration.
Let them shake the sand out from the inside of their riding pants.
Let them face the fear building inside of them.
Let them step back on again.

Yes, let your child have a bad ride.
Let them hate the horse that challenges them.
Let them learn what fight and passion and ambition mean.
Let them realize that when they refuse to quit the horse will take the time to listen.

Grant them the joy of realizing that they are connecting with another living being.
Grant them the joy of realizing that they, although they are small, can be powerful.
Grant them the joy of seeing their hard work pay off, through the days of tears can come a love unspeakable.

Yes, let your child have a bad ride.
Afterall, life will grant us plenty of them.

*not my words or picture, but I loved them so much I just had to share.*
