Today was the day we have been waiting for - Riding in the Moment officially began at Three Gaits today 🌟! Participants and caregivers braved the rain and came together to meet and interact with our program horses, roll a dice to see which horse would cross the finish line first and get a treat, and spend time with our staff and volunteers 💕

The winner of our May Volunteer Raffle is Laura Knipfer! Laura volunteers in our therapeutic riding programs on Wednesdays, and helps to fill in on lots of other events. We are so appreciative of her positive outlook, excitement for learning about the world of Therapeutic Horsmanship, and calm energy working with the horses. We can’t say thank you enough for the work that she does!

Three Gaits held our soft launch visit for Riding in the Moment, a program for increasing quality of life for adults living with dementia and their caregivers, this past Friday! Participants joined us for our garden-themed visit in the spirit of planting season, and spent some time grooming and learning about our horses.

Our full 8-week session of Riding in the Moment begins on June 28th, and we can’t wait to welcome everyone back. The summer will be filled with horses and fun, including live music, cheese tasting, visits from other animals, and more.

Thanks to the Wisconsin Partnership Program , the Geriatric Health Services Research Lab, Community-Academic Aging Research Network - CAARN, Stoughton Area Senior Center, Aging and Disability Resource Center of Dane County, Hearts & Horses, and all who have helped make this program possible.

We didn’t take nearly enough pictures today, but we are beyond grateful for the help we received from the hardworking volunteers from Blackhawk Church, our wonderful Three Gaits volunteer crew, and our staff that gave up their Sunday to help make the farm ready for our riders outdoor adventures 💕☀️💕.

We had the very special opportunity to spend the morning with members of Spina Bifida Wisconsin for a “try it” day at Three Gaits. Too many smiles to count - we hope to see everyone again soon 💕 🐴

Our "try-it" event at Three Gaits was an amazing success. Baylor said she would ride a million times a day if she could! Baylor, Lucy, Norah, Maddie and Charlotte had a wonderful time! Norah and Lucy were brave enough to have their horses trot! Charlotte got to give her horse watermelon for a treat! Maddie steered her horse weaving through cones like a pro! Thank you to all the Three Gaits volunteers and staff who kept our riders safe while building their confidence and focusing on everyone's abilities!

This evidence-informed program includes opportunities to groom, interact with or ride horses, and participate in activities in a nature-based setting. To join Riding in the Moment™, participants must have a documented diagnosis of dementia in the early/middle stages and live in the community with a family member or friend who can provide transportation.

Meet our newest program horse Alastar (aka "Zinc"). Alastar is a 10 year-old American Warmblood. He has the sweetest personality and already is a barn favorite🥰.

He recently completed specialized training to join our programs and last night he graduated to his first therapeutic riding lesson! Thank you to our anonymous donor for making this happen. We are so excited for Alastar's future at Three Gaits!!!

Tonight we celebrated our Dane County Youth Apprenticeship Program students at the end-of-year dinner for nearly 500 youth who are learning while doing in hundreds of careers. Thank you Marleigh and Lucas for all your work and ideas, and thank you Three Gaits staff member Erin for early morning and late evening mentoring in the barn.

We hope everyone has fun at Midwest Horse Fair this week!

With recent occurrences of EHV in Wisconsin, we ask that anyone that visits the fair does not come directly to Three Gaits afterwards allowing for time to change your clothes and boots to minimize the risk of transmitting the virus. We appreciate your support in keeping our horses safe, happy and healthy!

➡️Midwest Horse Fair Tip of the Day:

Reminders on how to keep our horses safe:
👉 If you purchase used tack, remember to wash it before you use it on your horse
👉 When at the fair, please do not pet horses without the owners permission
👉 MHF will have hand sanitizer stations throughout the barns for you to use throughout the weekend
👉 After you visit the fair, you should change out/wash your clothes and shoes before you visit or feed your horses

Three Gaits had the amazing opportunity to participate in the Wisconsin Idea Conference today, hosted by the Morgridge Center for Public Service. We were inspired by the incredible initiatives that are taking place in our community, and are grateful to all of the community members that took time out of their day to learn about Riding in the Moment - an adaptive horsemanship program for people with early to middle stage dementia- that will begin at Three Gaits this summer.
