I love Aussies. But I did a lot of research on the breed and worked with many before I got one, and talked with the breeder about what I wanted the dog for to make sure I had the best odds for a good fit. SO many Aussies come into Australian Shepherds Furever for doing what they were bred to do, and because owners didn’t appropriately channel their instincts.

Know the breed before you buy one - and only pick a dog that is going to match your lifestyle, family, and needs.

This is Olive. She could really use a foster to come through for her.

She’s a 4 year old Australian Shepherd whose owner has to rehome her due to some health issues.

Olive weighs 38 lbs. She is spayed, microchipped and up to date on shots, but isn’t on heartworm prevention. Olive is good with kids and dogs! She hasn’t been tested around cats.

Please let me know if you are interested in fostering or adopting Olive. Looking at you, Brian

Still looking for a foster for Brody here. He’s probably 75 lbs but is packing some extra. Big, beautiful boy who loves adults but NOT kids. Unknown with cats. Gets along with dogs next door but has not lived with other dogs. Some reaource guarding - owner says has guarded bones and toys but has been better in recent years. Can also guard food from other dogs.

Needs a foster as soon as possible. Parents have been keeping him but can’t much longer. Young man loves him but is surrendering him because Brody is very reactive to girlfriend’s young children and they now live together. Brody loves walks and hikes (although may need to work back into long walks given his extra weight). Same, Brody, same lol.

He’d benefit from a refresher on basic manners; his owner admits he didn’t train him a lot. If reasonably local to us, we would be happy to donate some training.

He’s seven, possibly eight now because he’s been waiting MONTHS for a foster. Anyone for this big beautiful boy?

Available for adoption in Connecticut: Hi there! I’m Prince. I will be three in March 2024 and if I have to say it myself, I’m pretty darned cute. My best features are I like other dogs big and small, including intact males, and I like cats too! I’m not overly fond of the crate but I’m learning. I am housetrained and leash trained - I’m a quick learner!
I also come with a bunch of my own stuff.

Seriously. You know the scenes on Downton Abbey where the servants are carrying all the family’s traveling stuff to the cars? Yeah. I have a bed, my car seat, a harness, leash, toys - it’s like having a “so you adopted a dog” kit! Even when I’m nervous, I will jump right into my car seat. I’ve gone through a lot of change in the last month, so I’m still a little nervous and shy, and I am still working on my manners a bit.
I am learning not to jump, but we herding dogs can do that a lot (because we want to be as close as possible to you EVERY SECOND). And I sometimes get too excited giving you smooches and forget that I shouldn’t nibble (Oops).

I came into rescue because my first owner changed jobs and had to be away a lot. He didn’t want me to be lonely so he asked ASF if they could find a human for me who could spend time with me, take me for walks, and be my very best friend. I’m originally from NY, but am now in CT.

Oh! Did I mention I know sit, down, touch, and the nice lady who chauffeured me says I am “very responsive to direction?” She thinks I know “no” and “leave it” pretty well and I will look to you when I don’t know how to react to a situation. An experienced owner who knows how to provide patient, consistent leadership would be perfect for me!

I am really looking forward to finding my new best friend! I’ll let my chauffeur friend tell you a little bit about what I’m looking for in a human:

Prince is a friendly, affectionate little guy. He’s just under 50lbs. He’s sweet and very friendly once he has a chance to figure out you’re nice. At first, he can be a little hesitant. A few pieces of string cheese will fix that right up - he’s very food motivated.
He does jump some, and gets very excited giving kisses so sometimes he will nibble your lip. He is most happy following direction, so he needs someone who is confident giving it, and someone who knows herding breeds - Aussies in particular. He is likely not ideal for a family with children under 10, as he can display some displaced herding and nip the back of the legs if he is not redirected. Patient, consistent reinforcement of good behavior will pay off with this guy - he’s really a gem and wants to please. Once he understands what you’re looking for, he’s eager to comply.

Please note that Prince is only about 3 weeks out of being put into rescue, and also changed fosters. When he goes to his new family, he will need 2-3 weeks of decompression time - low stimulation and either being tethered, crated, or gated off in his own space while he gets used to his new family and routine. He will need intro to strangers and new things, but if you’re confident and patient with him, he quickly warms up.

He really is a wonderful dog, and would make a great companion / hiking or walking buddy. We haven’t seen him play a lot yet, which may be due to all the changes he’s adjusting to. If you think Prince may be right for you, please apply at : https://www.australianshepherdsfurever.org/adoption-application

There is an additional $20 microchip fee which includes registration and transfer to his new furever family. All adoption fees are used for future rescue efforts.

Just look at this smile! Rocco is ready to find his new best friend. He needs a new foster due to reactivity to cats, and is also looking for his forever family.

Rocco is a 7 year old red and white Aussie with handsome copper accents and a nub tail. We do not know the full extent of the trauma he endured before coming to rescue, but we do know that this diamond in the ruff is transforming into a wonderful dog! He had been severely neglected, and when he came to us, he was very thin and his coat was a mess. With his foster family, he’s learning about the joys of grooming and a healthy coat, and he has gained 20 pounds! He’s now at a healthy weight of about 60 pounds. His foster family adores him and has also exposed him to the joys of swimming! Despite his past experiences,
Rocco is a very affectionate and devoted dog. It takes him a while to warm up, but he is loyal and loves pets, once he gets to know and trust you. He’ll happily sit with you on the couch to receive lots of pets.

We don’t know that Rocco got to play with lots of dogs in his past life, but he enjoys the company of his canine foster siblings, including chase and wrestle. We think he’d do best with a more submissive pal, or we think he’d thrive as an only dog. His foster dad describes him as a great friend! Wants to be with his people and go with you anywhere - speaking of which he is good in the car. He has a lovely medium energy level. We recommend an adult home or older children for Rocco.

Rocco can not be in a home with cats or small animals. He is good with horses though! Rocco is neutered, up to date on vaccines, crate trained, house trained, and walks well on a leash (though sometimes he barks/reacts at new people and dogs on walks). Rocco will require ongoing training and positive experiences to be his best self, but this soulful guy is so worth it!

He is posted for adoption through Australian Shepherds Furever and just waiting for his new family to come along.

I do have to start this post by saying that your dog doesn't need to meet other dogs.
I know that is controversial for some to hear but very few dogs are truly dog social....many are highly selective.
They may only like their own breed.
They may only like female dogs....small brown dogs...or curly coated dogs.
They have (and are ALLOWED) their own social preference....just as we have our own social preferences.

Or they may just dislike any other dog outside their/your family and friends.

Encouraging dogs to meet a dog walking down the street (even with the best of intentions) can cause some serious issues.

Reactivity and/or aggression.
Injury.
A lessening of the strong bond they may have with you as they can no longer trust your judgement.

So meeting dogs on a walk, just because there is another dog there is something I highly discourage.

However....
There are some circumstances where you may have to introduce dogs. So these are a few tips which have been written about before (separately) in graphics but I have squeezed them together for a clearer reference.

One of the biggest mistakes people make is only concentrating on their own dogs emotional state and not watching the rising stress in the other dog involved....
These cause those "Out of the blue" reactions....

They weren't out of the blue, they were just missed.

🔵Micro meetings are essential.
🔵Parallel walks are a must.
🔵Avoid face to face.
🔵Keep your voices light and happy.
🔵DON'T make a dog sit or lie down.
🔵Tension creates more tension so keep those leads loose.
🔵NEUTRAL territory....not your yard, your house or even your immediate area around your house....go somewhere else.

Biggest tip though (as mentioned) watch the body language of both dogs.....IGNORE the tail wags and watch the whole body and all the little tell tale signs given.

If it doesn't feel right...it likely isn't.
Trust your own intuition.

ALWAYS advocate for your own dog no matter how "friendly" you are told the other dog is.
