Check out this sweet moment between a volunteer and one of our shelter pups, who was snuggled up as close as possible to hear the story she was reading him! 😍

If you're looking for a way to help shelter animals and catch up on your to-be-read list at the same time, consider coming to read to our dogs during our public Paws and Pages program! Pima Animal Care Center hosts this event every Wednesday from 5-7 p.m.! 💙

Reading to the animals in our shelter can have a huge impact on their levels of stress and help our more shy friends get used to human company. Come share your love of stories with our shelter dogs!

Señor Gomez’s Eulogy

Today we said goodbye to Señor Gomez. He called Four Paws Vet Clinic home for 12 great years. Señor Gomez was loved by many. You could say he had his own fan club! Over the years, people who weren’t even clients, would make it a habit of stopping in to say “Hi” on their way to shop in the business complex. He was gentle with kids and helped socialize kittens raised in the clinic. He would walk on the front desk counter to be petted, winning over even the most dedicated dog owner. Delivery drivers, the security guard, crematory service employees and our medical reps would take time to see Gomez and ask about his welfare if he wasn’t in his usual spots.
He had his jokester side too, sitting on the bathroom shelf to meow at unsuspecting people. His deep black fur helped him blend into the navy blue lobby chairs, startling those who unwittingly tried to sit down.
Gomez had impeccable taste. He loved perfume smells and aromatic scents of shampoos and conditioners. If you needed an opinion on your new brand, he was the cat to ask!
Gomez would nestle into any blanket we layed down. He was especially fond of “quality control” testing our recovery blankets when we prepared for pets coming out of surgery. You can be sure he had his stamp of approval before any patient used the blanket.
When not napping, he could be found sitting at the lobby window watching the birds or weighing himself on the front scale. A good belly rub and brushing was a great way to end the day.

With all our love-the Four Paws Veterinary Clinic staff

Today is Pet Fire Safety Day. Do you have a plan to evacuate your mobility-challenged dog? Nobody wants to think about possible tragic events, but it's better to be prepared.

Take a couple of minutes today to move through your home and consider the following:

🧯 Do you have smoke detectors and fire extinguishers? Where are they and have you tested them recently? (I'd say do it at the Fall and Spring time changes, but, you know, Arizona time and all...)

🏡 Where are your escape routes? It's best to have two in case one is blocked.

🐾 How will you get your pet out? Will they/can they come to you when you call them? Practice the recall command with your dog consistently so it works in a scary situation.

🏋 Can you carry your dog? If not, how will you move them in an emergency, possibly without their harness or cart or other equipment? You'll probably need to crawl to your exit to stay below the smoke level. Place you dog on a sheet, blanket, or towel to drag your them to safety. Wrap them in the material if necessary to keep them with you and moving toward the exit.

📱Where will you go once you're out of the home? Get safely away from the fire and call for help (911). DO NOT GO BACK INSIDE. Use the sheet, blanket, or towel to secure your dog and keep them close to you. Remember, they'll be scared too, and may need medical attention.

🏥 If the first responders can't provide assistance to your dog immediately, find help in getting your dog to an emergency veterinary hospital right away if necessary.

Preparation goes a long way toward making good decisions in an emergency situation. Be prepared!
