Tuesday August 1st at 11 a.m. was a very sad moment as Onyx Jade Ledoux, one of our mascots, and a beloved companion to her family, had to be laid to rest due to severe joint arthritis and degrading in one of her knees. at ten and a half years old there was sadly no reasonable options that would improve her quality of life, so her family made the hard decision to release her from her pain.

In 2013, just two years after the opening of Paws In Place, one year old Onyx (a Dutch Shepherd) joined her new family, and became a mascot for us, demonstrating not only training in a large variety of areas, including some sports, but overall good dog etiquette. She trained for Narcotic detection, dabbled in Bitework, competed in dock diving, lure coursing, and obedience. She demonstrated some of her training at our fair booths, and assisted in our dog training classes where needed. In her leisure time she enjoyed her family, playing fetch with the rest of her pack through obstacle courses, camping, hiking, biking, swimming, and just being with her family.

In 2018, she helped welcome their first child/new pack member, a little boy named Asher, and she was amazing and so gentle around the baby. She quickly learned how to properly walk alongside a stroller, and respect the new baby's personal space, as the boy grew to a toddler, she helped stand watch over him while he played, and was super patient in his learning process on what is acceptable and not when interacting with dogs. She also helped Asher with his autism through helping him in learning to socialize with other children.

In 2020, she once again helped the family welcome a baby girl, Gabby. Despite getting older, and showing signs of arthritis, she still did amazing with the new baby and helping teach the new little one the ropes.

Over the last couple years, due to her arthritis, her free time with the children was limited, for everyone's safety, to training times and during special supervision. But she was still able to help start the children on the learning path of leash walking, properly correcting the dogs, and giving commands.

When her pain became too much, her whole family came to be with her as she drifted off to sleep, her last sight was of the kids saying goodbye.

A very gentle soul, but also a fierce protector when she thought her people were in danger, she can never be replaced, but will be missed and remembered forever.

Available for adoption

Name: Diamond
Breed: Pit Bull
Gender: Female
Breeding Status: Intact
Age: 1 year
Color: Tan (very very faint brindle)

Reason: Diamond's owner came to this decision in tears as this is her "baby", she had to make a choice for Diamonds best interest due to unavoidable life and home circumstances.

Pros:
- Loves people
- Learns quickly
- Eager to please (just needs help calming down enough to pay attention)
- Crate trained
- No aggression issues

Cons:
- She is a jumper on everyone, she is so excited and happy to meet people that she jumps (our trainers will be working with her on that while she is here)
- She had been having accidents in her previous home (upon evaluation, most of the issue comes down to she got too distracted to potty, so when she came back inside she had an accident, regular walks and exercise have fairly quickly ended this issue).
- Chews, if she gets bored she will chew things, so she does need to be crated when left alone, and kept an eye on when loose with her people (again, with regular exercise, and providing appropriate chews, this has mostly settle down)
- Overwhelming: she plays like she loves, very intense, she may need help learning when other dogs are done and need a break, and many dogs may not handle her play style well, so caution when pairing her off with another dog is advised (she listens to our 12 year old dog most of the time, and is doing fantastic with our 6 month old puppy and 8 year old Vizsla, just needs to be told to take a break from play sometimes.
- getting better on leash: She will pull, but in the hands of someone experienced, she quickly stops pulling and settles into a walk.

Temperament/Personality Overview:
She has come from a limited outdoor, play, and exercise apartment life, so consistent exercise and a fenced yard she will LOVE. Most of the cons we will list below are pretty much stemming from lack of consistent and appropriate exercise and rules. She loves people, and to be loved. Her previous owner stated she loves the vet and groomer, and loves kids. Inside our fence she will alert and look ferocious when someone comes in the driveway (a plus for those wanting an intimidating looking dog) but it is all a display, and she is more than happy to let the person pet her.

We have evaluated her with our children, aside from her jumping and over excitement, she is good with kids.

The only signs of aggression has been when another dog tries to take something she is actively chewing on, or won't stop something when she indicates she is done, but she just does enough to get the other dog to back off, and is very appreciative when human steps in to help her. (Basically she will stick up for herself if another dog is being disrespectful, but prefers not to have to).

She is fine with cats, ducks and chickens, very easily shut down by a cat that doesn't like dogs, but is happy to be buddies with our dog friendly cats. Rarely chases the chickens or ducks, and it's just for fun.

Her adoption fee is $350

I like to share this post every year or so. It always seems to be something folks are struggling with. SA is often unintentionally created, and often done so with good intentions but poor understanding.

•Pet your dog, all the time
•Talk to your dog, all the time
•Allow your dog to follow you, all the time
•Allow your dog to be on your lap or laying on your feet, all the time
•Pet, soothe, comfort your dog when it whines or barks for attention...or is simply anxious
•Allow your dog to demand affection/interactions
•Be emotionally dependent on your dog
•Allow your dog to do whatever it wants, whenever it wants
•Provide no structure or rules
•Refuse to crate train your dog
•Refuse to correct your dog when inappropriate behavior occurs
•Refuse to train your dog to be calm, relaxed, and independent by using a “Place” command, and/or “away” time in the crate
•Allow you and your home to be a free-for-all, where your dog has zero leadership and guidance
•Let your dog out of the crate when it whines or barks
•Avoid training or anything that makes your dog uncomfortable or unhappy
•And many, many more...

Basically, baby, soothe, allow, enable, lean on, and create a toxic dependency...so when you leave, your dog is a mess, because you haven’t prepared them to be strong, resilient, robust, independent, and alone.

The same way you do. 🙂

When mom said you were grounded for a month, but paroled you after three days. When your mate found a questionable text, and let it go. When you realized you could “clock out” from work even while still clocked in.

We all notice when rules have gaps. And seeing as we’re all susceptible to being opportunistic, when those gaps are either not enforced, or you realize they go unnoticed, things can get interesting...fast.

Same with your dog. Initially the walk was a strict heel, but then it got a little looser. A sit, down, or place command was absolutely non-negotiable—until it wasn’t. That impeccable recall was on a dime, until your dog realized you were happy to call him 7 times, and none of those 7 had a correction attached to it.

And that’s how simple “unlearning” is. Tiny little moments that don’t seem all that important, start to create a little crack. And then the crack get bigger, and bigger, and...

And eventually, all that stuff your dog “knew” is gone. Well, it’s not actually gone. It’s still in there, but without the pattern of consistency of demands, and consequences for lack of complying with those demands, all that learning can get “misplaced.”

And next thing you know, you’re asking yourself all kinds of questions. Questions like: how did things get so messy? How did my dog “forget” so much? Why is my well-trained dog, so poorly trained?

But if you’re honest, you know. Because it’s the same with you.

Rules without consequences are merely suggestions. And suggestions, in the face of more desirable pursuits, are often ignored.

But you knew that. :)

Last night, while waiting to board our plane, Carter Jean was being her usual inquisitive self wanting to meet and say “hi” to everyone she could, until she walked up on this man.

He reached out and asked if she wanted to sit with him.
He pulled out his tablet and showed her how to draw with it, they watched cartoons together, and she offered him snacks.

This wasn’t a short little exchange, this was 45 minutes.
Watching them in that moment, I couldn’t help but think, different genders, different races, different generations, and the best of friends.

This is the world I want for her.
In a country that is so deeply divided by beliefs, I want her life to be filled with moments like this... not liberal or conservative republican or democrat, socialist or capitalist, just HUMAN.

Joseph from Samsungus in Oklahoma, if this should happen to find you.
Thank you for showing my daughter what kindness and compassion looks like.
Continue to shine your light in the world.
