Tuesday August 1st at 11 a.m. was a very sad moment as Onyx Jade Ledoux, one of our mascots, and a beloved companion to her family, had to be laid to rest due to severe joint arthritis and degrading in one of her knees. at ten and a half years old there was sadly no reasonable options that would improve her quality of life, so her family made the hard decision to release her from her pain.
In 2013, just two years after the opening of Paws In Place, one year old Onyx (a Dutch Shepherd) joined her new family, and became a mascot for us, demonstrating not only training in a large variety of areas, including some sports, but overall good dog etiquette. She trained for Narcotic detection, dabbled in Bitework, competed in dock diving, lure coursing, and obedience. She demonstrated some of her training at our fair booths, and assisted in our dog training classes where needed. In her leisure time she enjoyed her family, playing fetch with the rest of her pack through obstacle courses, camping, hiking, biking, swimming, and just being with her family.
In 2018, she helped welcome their first child/new pack member, a little boy named Asher, and she was amazing and so gentle around the baby. She quickly learned how to properly walk alongside a stroller, and respect the new baby's personal space, as the boy grew to a toddler, she helped stand watch over him while he played, and was super patient in his learning process on what is acceptable and not when interacting with dogs. She also helped Asher with his autism through helping him in learning to socialize with other children.
In 2020, she once again helped the family welcome a baby girl, Gabby. Despite getting older, and showing signs of arthritis, she still did amazing with the new baby and helping teach the new little one the ropes.
Over the last couple years, due to her arthritis, her free time with the children was limited, for everyone's safety, to training times and during special supervision. But she was still able to help start the children on the learning path of leash walking, properly correcting the dogs, and giving commands.
When her pain became too much, her whole family came to be with her as she drifted off to sleep, her last sight was of the kids saying goodbye.
A very gentle soul, but also a fierce protector when she thought her people were in danger, she can never be replaced, but will be missed and remembered forever.
