I’m incredibly grateful to have a few weeks to breathe after what has truly been a dream summer of competing and training. While it was everything I could have hoped for, it was also incredibly demanding, both for me and my horses. In the whirlwind of it all, I didn’t have much time to process the ongoing challenges—from losing our home in February to dealing with health issues I chose not to share at the time, and navigating other personal matters. As I begin another year of high school, I often find myself feeling overwhelmed, struggling to accept that it’s okay to feel this way. I’m looking forward to these next few weeks to catch up, reflect on the incredible opportunities this summer has brought, and take the time to sit down and focus. 💌❤️

This might be an unpopular opinion that will rattle some but I think it's an important one...

The extent to which horse owners feel the need to bubble wrap their horses, I think, stems from how common it is to, well, not let horses be horses...

Horses who grow up having virtually no time in a herd...

Horses who grow up only ever getting to autonomously move on perfectly manicured, flat ground in a small paddock...

Horses who don't have the space to go faster than a walk or trot unless, of course, it is when they're under saddle and being piloted by a person...

How can they be expected to NOT be accident-prone when they've not been allowed to live a life that's autonomous enough to learn some self-preservation?

How are they supposed to know how to move in a way to prevent injury when they aren't exposed to different terrains, or allowed to self-exercise in larger areas?

How can they learn how to coexist in herds without picking fights without developing social skills?

Or, how can they even share fence lines without causing problems if they haven't learned how to properly communicate with other horses due to being deprived of opportunities to learn how to do so?

Even outside of learned behaviours within the brain, the body (especially the hoof and soft tissues) can't really condition itself to withstand forces that it was never exposed to.

Movement of the body is absolutely crucial to building soundness in addition to allowing the brain to learn about the environment.

The most accident-prone horses I consistently encounter are the ones who have had a history of not being allowed to be horses.

The ones who have existed in herds for all of, or most of, their lives tend to have the least amount of issues.

Sure, accidents can still happen, but I would be lying if I didn't admit that this observation wasn't becoming exceedingly more obvious to me the more I've moved away from being the exact type of person to bubble wrap horses.

The more I allowed them to learn how to safely exist as horses are intended, the less I find myself worrying about them.

The sight of my horse running across the field, as horses do, used to frighten me because I would worry about imminent injury...

There's no excuse not to turn your horses out🤷🏼‍♀️

The risk of them getting banged up by their friends is well worth it for what this does to their mental health.

These boys totally love their lives.

They go out in the mud, it makes them sure-footed.

They go out in a big group, it makes them more confident in a big class.

They go out for a long time, not just an hour, it makes them much more level-headed.

Also, they go out year-round with friends.
Even during show season.
So, maybe we go to a show with a few hairs missing from too much halter tag

No judge has ever commented on it

& for that, I am thankful to give my horses the life that they deserve. 💐

Hi everyone!

We are exceptionally excited to have Moray Nicholson in from Europe this weekend for a clinic. While we don’t have spots available, we do have availability for auditing! In lieu of auditing fees, we are asking for donations toward SCEC’s incredible school horses that are teaching the next generation of our sport.

A very good read!

This week's article discusses dressage terminology and why it is an integral part of learning and training in the right way. I travel a great deal to teach clinics. No matter where I go I teach riders that have quite a bit of education and riders that are new to the discipline of dressage. Regardles...
