So many people fooled into believing that healthy 10 pound pigs exist and that it’s normal or an actual breed. What people seem to misunderstand is that anyone can call their pig is some made up breed. All you need are a few people to go along with it, recruit some more to continue spreading that name around and before too long, the name that you decided on is recognizable and now used by others to describe their pig. Granted, this doesn’t actually establish an actual new breed of pigs, there are several milestones to hit before the scientific community will accept a bee breed of pigs. Technically a new breed would mean that there is a distinguishing factor that is consistently reproduced in that particular group of pigs. The pigs around nowadays do not have any distinguishing features that potbellied pigs didn’t have more than 30 years ago. It’s the names used to market pigs that are the problem. Even the words used to classify pigs, such as “mini” may be misinterpreted, so everyone has to continue educating and spreading the message that these pigs do not stay small. They don’t make great friends for dogs, they are a lot of work, require consistent and patient families to love them when they get bigger, need different accomodations, destroy things, and for the rest of their lives.
If you are interested in learning more about the teacup pig and micro mini pig myth, we created pages that can be shared with those who just can’t seem to leave the fantasy behind or to simply give them a deeper look into the why the pig community is rallying around stopping the spread of misinformation. Some people will be reasonable, some people are just destined to be “that” person who just won’t listen because they’ve done their research. (Looked at a breeders page) SMH.
