Winston left the Maine C**n Chalet this morning (March 25, 2024) at 1am. He suffered a sudden onset of Feline aortic thromboembolism (FATE). It is a fatal disease where a blood clot gets lodged into the aortic trifurcation.
We had a normal day/evening. Winston napped with me, his fave place to hang out, as we both watched and napped during the Formula One and IndyCar races.
I went to bed to watch a little TV and crash out, with Winston in tow as normal. I was watching (kinda) Shark Tank and Winston was cuddled up next to me. I turned off the TV and remember hearing Mary prepping the kittie's late night snack. Winston then headed downstairs to join the rest of the family.
I was awakened by a very alarming meow. While trying to figure out what it was Mary rush upstairs to tell me that Winston was in distress.
His back legs were paralyzed and he yowled in obvious, extreme pain. We both immediately got dressed and drove to the pet hospital. On the way there we both feared the worst.
The people at Pacific Northwest Pet ER were very quick and professional to act when we entered the door at Midnight. They immediately asked the DNR questions and we quickly discussed how serious this was. They took him away to give him pain meds and diagnose his condition and led us into a private room where we filled out the necessary paperwork.
A doctor entered within minutes to give us Winston's terminal diagnoses. Also called Saddle Thrombosis, FATE is fairly common in male cats. There is no feasible treatment that is worth pursuing for FATE. It is very, very expensive and rarely successful. We agreed that euthanasia was really the only choice here for Winston.
Two techs brought him in swaddled in a blanket with a catheter prepared to inject medications. Even with the pain meds Winston was still in extreme stress and pain. They instructed us to "press the button" when we were ready for the doctor. I immediately told them, "Get the doctor now please!" I told Mary to press the button repeatedly. The doctor then entered and performed the euthanasia while I held Winston in my arms.
Rest in Peace, Winston. You will always be a part of our always evolving Maine C**n family. Your memories and love will live forever in the Chalet. He would have been 12 years this July 4th.
