We have yet to see a patient who doesn't absolutely ROCK the doggles! This is Mallard, and he was here this weekend for a laser treatment. Laser treatments can be very beneficial for patients with wounds, arthritis and joint pain, and to help surgical incisions heal. This procedure is non-invasive, quick, and painless. We are one of the few general practices in the area that have an in-house laser, and we like to utilize it as much as we can to help our patients. Give us a call if you think your pet may benefit from a laser treatment!

Fireworks and thunderstorm season is here and while you may enjoy both, the racket can be downright terrifying for your dog. If your pet trembles, whines, drools, or clings to you when there are loud noises, he or she likely suffers from a condition known as noise aversion. There are several things you can do to help your pet get through these events:

-- Turn on soothing music to dull the noise or try distracting your dog with games and toys.
-- If your pet is healthy enough, vigorous exercise or play can sometimes help alleviate stress.
-- If exercise and distraction aren’t options, there are natural solutions to try including compression clothing like a Thundershirt or calming aromatherapy herbals such as lavender oil.
-- Should your pet have serious noise aversion and other remedies are not effective, our vets can help with various prescription anti-anxiety medications.

If you’d like to make an appointment to talk about anti-anxiety medications, give us a call at the office!

Memorial Day is coming up! As you prepare for cookouts, camping, or just hanging with family and friends, keep your pet’s safety in mind with these tips:

-- Beware toxic foods. Onions, grapes, raisins, and avocado are all toxic to animals, so keep them out of paws reach. Corn cobs can cause gastrointestinal obstructions and cooked bones are a choking hazard.

-- Don’t leave pets unsupervised around water. Not all dogs are expert swimmers, and drinking pool water full of chemicals can make them sick.

-- Insect spray is for humans only. Unless it is specifically designed for animals, the chemicals in insect spray can cause vomiting, diarrhea, drooling, and even neurological damage.

-- Provide plenty of cool water and shade. Pets can get dehydrated quickly and those with flat faces, like pugs and Persians, are especially susceptible to heat stroke.

Have a safe Memorial Day Weekend, and a safe summer! 🌤

The truth about feeding raw and homemade!

You may have heard that feeding your cat or dog a homemade raw diet is the way to go, but it can actually cause a lot more harm than good. There are no clinically proven benefits of a raw food diet, but there are several clinically documented hazards and risks.

One of the biggest risks for your pet is the potential for nutritional deficiencies. By just feeding a homemade or raw diet, owners often overlook the essential vitamins and minerals that commercially made pet foods include. Omitting these from your pet’s diet can lead to long term health problems and GI issues.

Another big risk is potentially exposing your pet (and yourself!) to harmful bacteria and parasites such as Salmonella and Listeria. A recent study shows that over 25% of raw pet food samples tested positive for harmful bacteria, including Salmonella ssp. and Listeria monocytogenes. These bacteria can pose a health risk for the dogs who eat the raw food, as well as for the dog and cat owners who handle the food while preparing it. They can present in similar ways, with symptoms for both humans and animals including vomiting, diarrhea, fever, lethargy, and inappetence.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Center for Veterinary Medicine (CVM), and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) stand united in their position (based on very robust data) that feeding raw food to cats and dogs is potentially dangerous to both the pet, and to you. Given all of this information, it is reasonable to conclude that a commercially prepared, conventional, complete and life-stage balanced pet food is a better choice. Your veterinarian can help you to choose the nutrient profile that best fits your cat or dog.

Give us a call at the office if you have any questions, or need any guidance for your pet’s diet!

It’s been a long winter, but it appears that spring is finally on the way. Here are a few tips to make sure your pet stays safe as the weather changes and you start getting out more.

- Avoid mushrooms. Many poisonous mushrooms look like edible mushrooms and can make your pet very ill. Make sure to inspect your yard for mushrooms and watch your pet closely on the trail.

- Spring cleaning. Keep all cleaners and chemicals far away from pets. Even “all-natural” cleaners contain chemicals that may be harmful to animals. You can visit the ASPCA’s Poisonous Household Products page for more information.

- Grow your garden with care. Fertilizers, insecticides, and herbicides can have ingredients that can make your pet very sick if they’re ingested. Also, many popular spring-blooming plants, such as rhododendron and azalea, are highly toxic to pets.

- Know your pet first-aid. More outdoor activity means a greater chance of injury and illness. Put together a simple pet first aid kit, and understand that when in distress, even the most gentle pet might scratch or bite. Handle any injured or sick animal with care, following these emergency handling guidelines.

- Bee aware. Bees and other insects are on the move in spring and if your pet is stung, you’ll want to know what to do. Check for a stinger and remove if possible. You’ll also want to reduce swelling, which you can do with a paste of baking soda and water. Check with your vet about administering an antihistamine to stave off an allergic reaction.

If you have questions about keeping your pet healthy this spring, don’t hesitate to call us at 860-376-2544.

⚠️Attention Pachaug Animal Hospital clients!⚠️

PAH is considering implementing periodic vaccination clinics for our patients. These would not be recommended for pets with chronic health issues. These clinics would be for vaccinations only, not for things such as nail trims or a**l gland expressions.

Please take a moment fill out this quick, 2-question survey to let us know if you and your furry friend(s) would be interested!
