Owner and founder of K9 Spectrum (formally Canine Manners), James Kohout, started his career in college at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, where he studied Animal Science and Pre-Veterinary Medicine. While pursuing his goal to become a veteri

narian, James found his passion to lie in animal training after he adopted his first dog, Tobias James. Rescued from a pit fighting ring and used as a bait dog, he realized the typical "treat training" method could not cure the issues Toby had. where he furthered his education. Through the course James realized that the method of treats did not fix behaviors, but actually made them worse. He pursued even more education at National K-9 School for Dog (www.NK9.com) where he received certification in many areas of professional dog training including puppy development and temperament testing, search and rescue, police K-9 and service dogs. Since then James has owned 10 dogs and has already trained over 3,000 animals in his relatively short career. Through these experiences James has developed an individualized method of training that best suits you and your household. Even with owning 10 dogs, each individual pup had their own temperament, personality and method of learning. At K9 Spectrum, we are "training humans one dog at a time." James is also an associate member of the International Association of Canine Professionals (www.canineprofessionals.com) and National K9 Graduates Association. We strive not only to excell at what we do, but also be able to give back to the community in any way possible. Currently we are reaching a goal of implimenting two programs on the western slope of Colorado. The first is a prison program in which dogs from shelters are trained by inmates at a specific facility in order to increase the chances that the dogs will be adopted. This will take time, but we hope to have it operational by 2014. The second effort will be to implement a canine behavior cirriculum for police officers, animal control and shelter workers. Hopefully, with the help of others, this program will be up and running in 2015. James was also a part of the City of Montrose v.s. Jeremiah Aguilar (the Dutch case), where he was titled as an expert and advisory witness by the courts. Based on James' evaluation and evidence in this case Jeremiah was acquitted of all charges and Dutch was released back into the custody of his parents. K9 Manners (formally Canine Manners) was established May of 2007 in Akron, Ohio. We have since moved our way across the country to Denver, CO until finally settling in our final home, Grand Junction, CO. With our wide variety of training, we have developed programs that suit the owner and dog based on both personality and lifestyle.
