Just as hot cars are dangerous for pets in the summer, cold cars pose a threat as well! Only take your pets in the car if it is necessary, and never leave them unattended.

Keep your pets leashed! More pets become lost in the winter than any other season because snowfall can disguise recognizable scents that would normally help them find their way home. Prevent your pets from becoming lost by keeping dogs leashed on walks and, just in case you are separated from your pets, make sure their collars have up-to-date contact information and they are microchipped.

KEEP YOUR PET LEAN

Pets that are overweight are at risk for a myriad of health issues. Obesity is the number one nutritional disease seen in pets currently and studies have shown that being overweight or obese can shorten a dog or cat’s life span by as much as two years. Why? Being overweight or obese puts your pet at risk for joint disease, heart disease and diabetes, among other things.

Great tip - Wipe their paws! During winter walks, your dog’s paws can pick up all kinds of toxic chemicals – salt, antifreeze, or de-icers. Be sure to wipe off your dog’s paws when you return from walks to prevent him from licking it off and becoming sick. Purchase pet-safe de-icers for your home for an extra level of safety. And when wiping off your dog’s paws, remember to check for signs of injury, such as cracked or bleeding paws.

Tips for your pets when the weather turns cold -

Some dogs are more susceptible to the cold than others. Short-coated, thin, elderly, or very young dogs get cold more quickly – so adjust the amount of time they stay outside! If your dog enjoys being outdoors and you will be outside longer than a few minutes, consider outfitting it with a sweater or coat to keep it warm. Hypothermia and frostbite pose major risks to dogs in winter, so remember, if it is too cold for you, it is probably too cold for your dog!

As your puppy joins the family, the all-important job of naming this new addition is a priority. Obviously, you will be using your dog's name constantly throughout his life, so your choice should be a wise one.

Pick something that has a nice ring to it and is not too long. It should be easy to say and simple for your puppy to understand. It's also important that your dog's name does not sound too similar to other words you plan to teach it.

Lazy Play Time

Busy with work but got a pooch that wants to play? Invest in one of those toys with a looped rope on one side and a ball on the other. Hook the loop on your foot and let your dog play with the other end while you work.

11/05/2019

Cold weather can be tough on your pooch’s paws, causing them to become dry, cracked, and even bloody. To prevent this, or to soothe any pain if this has happened, apply Vaseline to their paws for instant moisture and relief.

Getting your Home Ready for a New Puppy

Be aware that "child-safe" latches do not tend to work on curious and determined puppies. It's best to secure lower cabinets and drawers with locks or metal hardware. These should be chew-proof and require opposable thumbs to operate.

Install durable baby gates or pet gates if needed to keep your puppy away from certain rooms of your home. It's a good idea to keep your dog away from the kitchen (especially the trash can) and the stairs. Proper puppy-proofing not only keeps your puppy safe, but it also gives you peace of mind.

Before you bring home your cute little furball, you need to ensure that your home is as safe as possible, both for your new puppy and your belongings. The puppy-proofing process is similar to toddler-proofing a home, but there are differences.

First, get an idea of the puppy-eye-view of your home. Electrical cords, potential toxins, and breakable items should be placed completely out of reach. Remember that your puppy can jump, climb, chew, and scratch, so place what you can very high up or in a locked cabinet.

Things to think about when you are considering getting a new dog.

What you absolutely need in a dog: Do you have children, cats, or other dogs? The dog you adopt needs to be able to get along with everyone in your home. Are you in an apartment or small home and need a small dog? Are you allergic to certain types of dogs and need a hypoallergenic breed? These are just a few of the things to consider.

Thinking about getting a new dog? Ask your dog-smart friends and family for advice

Since your friends and family know you well, ask them for advice. As dog-savvy owners, they can help you find a dog breed that’s a perfect match for you and your family’s lifestyle.

Are you thinking about getting a second dog? As a dog lover, you might be thinking the more, the merrier! While this is true in some ways, you still need to know that adding another dog to your household is a big decision. Think it over carefully before you decide on dog number two.

Is Your Dog Ready For a Housemate?
Think about how your dog will react to having another dog in the house. Consider your dog's temperament around other dogs. Does he get along well with most dogs? Have you ever had another dog in your home to see his reaction?

Dog ownership costs money. Sometimes it's a lot of money. Make sure your budget includes all of the routine costs associated with dog ownership, like food, dog supplies, and veterinary care. Don't forget extras, like the need to take a training class or the cost to hire a pet sitter when you travel. If money is tight, you can find ways to save money on dog expenses, but you still need a budget.

09/24/2019

When it comes to dog food ingredients matter. Over a lifetime, improper feeding can lead to health issues, including skin problems and malnutrition. Many experts think a poor diet can even lead to cancer.

09/21/2019

The American Heartworm Society strongly recommends year-round heartworm prevention for all dogs in all 50 states. Your vet will make the same recommendation, but it's not to turn a profit. It's because heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease. Caused by an infestation of the parasite Dirofilaria immitis, heartworms are transmitted by mosquitoes and can affect any dog anywhere in the US.

For a quick cool-down treat after playing in the hot weather, fed your dog this treat: chicken broth and apple ice cubes. Sounds a little gross to us, but your pooch is going to love lapping at these cool snacks.
All you have to do is fill an empty ice cube tray with small chunks of apple, then fill with chicken stock. Freeze and let your dog enjoy!

Exercise is a basic need for every dog. Lack of exercise can lead to health problems and behavior issues. Some dogs need more exercise than others, but most need more than simple walks.

Dogs need mental stimulation too. Try exercise that involves games to give your dog well-rounded activity. Many dogs will benefit from involvement in dog sports, of which there are plenty to choose from. Physically active dogs might really enjoy agility. Hounds and other curious sniffers usually love nose work or tracking.
