Please remember this a dog is not a toy with no feelings

When your dog comes to the dog kennel because you’re tired of him, because he bothers you, prevents you from going on holiday or other excuses...
He sits and waits.
He's waiting for you to come get him.
A second, a minute, an hour, a day, a month, a year --- he's waiting for you.
He doesn’t know why, but he’s waiting because he trusts you; because unlike you, he loves you.
Your dog is not a toy. Think twice before getting a dog. You have the responsibility of a living being and of a family member.

LET’S TALK TOOLS

Red Arrow: Harness that fits around the dog’s body and when connected to a clip leash, creates a pulling reaction from the dog. This pulling reaction triggers the shoulders and chest muscles to be used which then influences the dog to use strength to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk right next to you on a harness, you will not experience the pulling. Congratulations, I have yet to see this. 😂

Orange Arrow: Flat collar, usually used to connect a clip leash to and often times sits on the bottom of the neck due to gravity and the dog’s head being higher than the shoulders. This then triggers the dog’s shoulder muscles and the pulling starts. Again, this teaches the dog that strength needs to be used to get where they need to. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a flat collar, you will not experience the pulling. The majority of dogs I see are pulling during this setup.

Blue Arrow: Slip Leash is very high on the neck where it is placed behind the ears, behind the jaw bone, and it allows us to influence the dog’s head and brain. Shoulders and chest muscles are not triggered and physical strength is not used during the walk. When used correctly, little to no pressure is on the leash and physical strength is used by the dog to get from point A to point B. If you have properly trained your dog to walk next to you on a slip leash, you will not experience any pulling.

Out of the 3 tools shown, the slip leash is one of the most productive tools to create a structured walk, a calm mind, and a solid relationship.

Ever watch anyone walk a horse by the saddle?

Yeah, me either.

That’s because when you walk a 1000lb animal, you need to influence the brain and not the body.

Let’s start influencing our dog’s mentally and not physically.

We seldom brag but why are we so unique?? Our doggies love the near 2 acres of mowed fenced fields they get to run and play on. Lots of ball playing and running around chasing their friends. Can’t help but want to run out there ourselves in bare feet like our doggies get to. The fields were formerly pasture for cattle/horses so they stay beautiful lush grass mowed at 2.5 to 3 inches just like most lawns. It is about an hour and half mowing process at least once a week but during peak growth season like we are in now it may be as quick as 4 days. The dogs absolutely love it which makes the effort so worth it.

Treat them like the great species they are

Dogs are dogs. They're not fur babies. They're not children. They're dogs.

That doesn't mean I don't love my dogs. It doesn't mean you can't call them your "kids" or "fur children." But for their sake, respect that they are dogs. Treat them well, but treat them as they should be.

People humanizing dogs is actually what's getting a lot of them put down, rehomed, dumped, and loaded with behavioral issues.

The best way to honor and love your dog is to respect the fact that they are different from us. That's part of what makes them so amazing!!

Bringing home a new dog and giving it whatever it wants, whenever it wants, is not setting them up for success. It may feel good to "spoil" them. I get it, but what you're actually doing is creating a brat.

I hear this often: "My dog bit our friend on the couch because he thinks the couch is his." OK, who let them think that? The dog didn't just waltz in and claim your couch. The dog wasn't given boundaries to begin with. I let my dogs on the couch, but if I tell them to get off and go to their bed, they will without hesitation. They've earned that privilege based on respect, trust, and understanding.

If you want to "spoil" your dog, do it by setting them up for success. Exercise them, give them boundaries, give them a job, and give them what they actually need instead of the latest squeaky toy. The time you spend playing with your dog means more than the toy itself.

Love your dog. Cherish your dog. Respect your dog, but for the love of the dog, TREAT THEM LIKE A DOG.

(And before anyone wants to say something silly...My dogs are my family. They literally signed my marriage certificate, but they also have boundaries. Just like any healthy family should!)

Little playtime with mama Belle this morning. We are down to just Ms Devon Rose who leaves for Cape Cod tomorrow afternoon. Then we can put all the puppy gear away and put the house back to normal for the summer. LOL. We tried the rubber mat runners this round and they worked great particularly as they were learning to walk. You don’t realize how even our feet slip slightly on the hardwood until you walk barefoot on the mat then the wood floor.

Cessna is on her big journey to North Carolina. She flew out of Portland with Dylan around 5:00. Soon to meet her new mama Fee once Dylan gets home. He made a very quick fly in visit this afternoon for a grab and go so Cessna didn’t have to fly alone. Dylan is basically our second son so we are so excited that he and his fiancée Fee will have one sweet girl to remind them of the family back in Maine. The remaining two babies head to their forever homes this weekend and we’ll get some photos up of all the families or adventures they are on later Sunday we hope. Picture is Dylan and Cessna waiting for their flight out of Portland.
