Most days we feel like we're not coping, but then remind ourselves of the changes we made everyday. One animal at a time. Through education and enforcing the Animals Protection act.

An animal is forever. I am at present housesitting for someone and she said something about her one dog and I just couldn't help thinking that some people have no idea how to bring up pets! Usually the one we have the most problems with are dogs because they are the most common pet. You also get, hamsters, guinea pigs, cats, birds, horses and etc.. But, dogs, probably create the most problems because people don't understand them properly. Most dogs euthenased before the age of two are as a result of behaviour problems, that the owner doesn't like, but are probably natural to the dog. This particular dog, that I am looking after, barks a lot at nothing, said the owner! Last night, yes, it was barking a lot, but I stood outside and listened and there was an echo! They live in a mountainous area. The dog was barking at its own bark! I just said, that's enough, in my usual growly way, and the dog stopped barking. It must be understood that dogs bark because they are scared, this dog's owner had never showed that she was in charge, hence the dog is scared and barks at things perceived. The dog didn't bark again for the rest of the night. Amazing! Try reading up on your particular breed you have chosen and read up on dog behaviour. If it is another pet, do the same thing and learn about what you have chosen. Have a good weekend! Learn! Never too old and you never know everything, learn something new everyday!

I am starting a new adventure with hubby and have laid down my scissors, thermometer and stethoscope for a while. From next week I shall be at the farm we have bought together with hubby's business partner. Having worked in the vet industry for 40yrs I am sure that I will miss it very much. I have had a tentative offer from someone to do some part time work but still have to finalise that. Hold that thought! Next week is going to be all about taking measurements and working out what veg to plant where, when and with whom! If there is a young person out there who would llike to take over management of this page please message me. I am sure it could be a great income for someone who knows how this all works! I have no idea and no interest to learn. Message me if you are interested. Until I get someone I shall still post from time to time.

I have seen so many posts wrt lost pets this last week. It actually physically drains me. Some have found their owners some were found by other people and then taken to vet or welfare! There are some simple things one can do to prevent this loss and anxiety, for the animal as well as the owner. Spay and castrate! Collar and tags. Microchip. And update your details when you move please! It makes me so angry that people are still saying we need a litter from our female dog so she won't get fat when we spay her! Please people that is a fallacy! It means that won't happen if you don't overfeed your dog!

When we are involved with animals, I believe that we are closer to nature than people who are not. Am I right? Leave a comment please? Then you should all know about Earth Hour, do you? About respecting the earth, using less energy, renewing the earth with plants and trees! I planted my tree today, it is of the protea species and called a Silver Tree. It has beautiful leaves with soft hair and it really does look like silver leaves. Anyway, Earth Hour is tomorrow night at 2030, so please have your lights off then, in fact, just throw the mains switch off, just to p*e everyone off and leave it off for an hour. Some cities may have organised events, I know there is one at Kirstenbosch, so if you are close attend it. Great! Let me know what you did for earth hour and if you honoured her with some gift!

Storm clouds in the sky. A little bit of rain for us in Cape Town, just to cool us off and put some water on our desperate plants! Lovely, danced in the rain, beautiful smell! A smell of renewal, maybe Zuma will go!

Just a short little note about the water situation in the Cape. Water is the most precious commodity on earth and we are busy polluting it and wasting it without a thought! Trees are also connected to water and are also incredibly important in the circle of life - protect them, plant them. Water doesn't just come out of a tap!!!!!! Water has to get to your geyser from the dam, you don't just use hot water instead of cold! Come on people, are you that thick? Just like butter doesn't come from a supermarket, there are other steps before it gets to the supermarket ie a cow drinks water, and gets fed and mates with a bull to produce a calf and is then with milk, which we suck out of her and then the milk is transformed, in factories, probably using water to clean the machines, and then tranformed into butter which eventually reaches our tables. Via a complicated transport system, which funnily enough, also uses a lot of water!!! Please remember the animals, especially in the townships, they also need water. Help each other and we will get through this with friends, from all over South Africa. Come together people and pray for water to fall from the sky, our beautiful South African sky!!!
