BLIKKIESDORP CALVINIA FINAL REPORT - AND IT’S A WRAP - 396 CATS AND DOGS STERILISED!

This is our last big project for the year, funded by NSP and Dancers Love Dogs, and what a CRACKER! This area is now officially ‘cleaned up’ and only maintenance is required going forward.

We always love to hear news from the ground – Dr Roos reports that there were absolutely ZERO objections to sterilisations – the first in history in any remote area, as she says. Fortunately, extensive pet care education has been done here. And then there are always a few dramas – a cat came in by an owner but not it a cat box. It managed to get itself up to the top of a 9m pole but the resourceful EnviroVet team found a guy with a ‘cherry picker’ that just happened to be in the area – and hey, presto – cat rescued and neutered.

Dr Roos and the incredible team from EnviroVet CVC, as always, went the extra mile to ensure that all the animals were treated for other problems presented. And again, Doc taught us a new condition in her report – Ehrlichia Epistaxis. You can Google this one.

As always, we thank the incredible Envirovet team who always goes beyond the call of duty – Dr Roos, Dr Elizna, Rene, Caro and Selina. You are awesome!

To Mariaan, who was Envirovet’s main person on the ground. Thank you for securing the venue, accommodation and meals for the team, and for providing a sourcing team. Your ongoing work in this area is invaluable and very much appreciated!

Thanks also to all of the volunteers who gave of their efforts to make this project such a huge success.

And most importantly, to YOU our generous supporters. Without you, these projects would not be possible at all.

JUST AWESOME!

Every year at this time Lyn and Dudley Marklew Family Wines make a generous donation to EnviroVet CVC in lieu of Christmas gifts to their closest family. This is a truly wonderful gesture for which we are sincerely grateful. Without such loyalty from our kind supporters, EnviroVet CVC would not be able to offer quality veterinary services to needy animals and their owners in the Western Cape and further afield. Thank you again Lyn and Dudley for sharing our vision and remembering us again this festive season.

IT IS JUST STERIS STERIS EVERYWHERE!
Today, the incredibly awesome EnviroVet CVC team started their 2nd Phase visit to Alexander Bay but firstly with a stop in Port Nolloth. NSP is exceptionally proud to be funding this project along with our ‘sister’ organisation, Dancers Love Dogs.

As you’d have seen from our previous posts, NSP is also focussed on Pet Population Management in extremely remote, indigent communities with little or zero access to vets. The projects are done in 2 phases, within 6 months (1 breeding cycle of 6 months) to sterilise at least 85% of the pet population. Thereafter only maintenance is required.

To date 974 animals have been sterilised in these phases with our funding to Port Nolloth, Kleinzee and Alexander Bay. For THIS project, up to 250 sterilisations have been funded by NSP and Dancers Love Dogs to ‘mop’ up Port Nolloth and Kleinzee and then to attend to Phase 2 in Alexander Bay.

A HUGE thank you to everyone on the ground who is providing support to the invincible Envirovet Team.

We are very excited to announce our next project! ATKV-Goudini Spa in Rawsonville is home to several feral cat colonies. These are very welcome ‘guests’ but as Goudini is concerned about their health and uncontrolled breeding they have called us in to assist.

As the colonies are distributed over this 33 Hectare resort, this project will be a concerted effort by the sterilisation A-Team of EnviroVet CVC, and the cat trapping expertise of CAT Garden Route.

This TNR (Trap, Neuter, and Return) project is a humane and effective way of helping reduce the population of feral cats over time. The process involves trapping the cats using a humane cat trap, having them sterilised and their ear clipped which is necessary for identification so they will not be trapped again. They will also be vaccinated, deflead and dewormed and then released back to where they came from, with a feeding scheme in place. The main objective is to create a stable, healthier, sterilised, local cat population.

Thank you, Goudini Spa, for caring for your cats!

PROJECT NIEUWOUDTVILLE DAY 1: 53 sterilised – 30 cats and 23 dogs.

Despite car problems, the fabulous EnviroVet CVC Team made their way from Cape Town to Nieuwoudtville and still managed to sterilise 53 cats and dogs.

NSP has provided funding for up to 250 sterilisations, and Doc Roos and Team are pushing hard to get as close to this figure as possible.

We wish Envirovet and everyone on the ground our best wishes for another successful project. Yaaaay Team!

Our Story

EnviroVet CVC is a satellite community veterinary clinic that falls under the umbrella of the South African Veterinary Association Community Veterinary Clinics (SAVA). The SAVA initiative was launched in 1998 to promote primary healthcare the poorer communities in South Africa that are unable to access the services offered by private veterinary practitioners. EnviroVet CVC was started in 2011 by Dr Annelize Roos and she has developed a dedicated and competent team. The team has been involved in numerous projects in and around the Cape Province of South Africa, focusing primarily on the sterilization of animals.

Primary veterinary care such as vaccinations, dipping, deworming, treatment of mange and TVT for animals in need are also done. Although Envirovet’s main focus is on sterilisation, education is very important as well. This does not mean going into the townships and imposing our views upon pet-owners. We do not simply remove animals, sterilise and return them. Confiscating animals in poor condition merely creates a vacuum which in turn is filled by another pet often as badly treated as the first. The Envirovet team know many of the animals individually, are aware of their circumstances, and beginning with the basic necessity of giving a pet a name, we teach people to respect their pets and treat them with love.
