As we are focusing on dental health this month, here are some tips to make sure your pet has a healthy mouth and good dental hygiene:
1. Check their teeth: Just like us humans, your pet's ’ teeth should be pearly white. If you have noticed your puppy’s teeth turning yellow as they grow older and have thought it normal with age, that is not the case. Yellow or brown teeth result from tartar and plaque accumulating over the years, and, exactly as it is for us, that’s not healthy for their teeth.
2. Inspect their gums:
The difference between healthy gums versus unhealthy ones can be noticed immediately by checking your pets mouth. Healthy gums are a salmon pink colour, moist, shiny and smooth. Unhealthy gums are red in colour, dry or sticky to the touch, look roughened and/lumpy. With very bad or advanced cases of gum disease, their gums might also be bleeding and painful when touched.
Poor dental hygiene/health is bad for our pet's as it can cause dental diseases such as gingivitis (gum disease), periodontal diseases (gum and bone infections), tooth fractures, tooth root abscesses and infection. If their gums look painful, it’s because they are. If you want to spare your pet from experiencing a lot of pain and discomfort, you’ll need to help them get rid of the bacteria accumulating on their teeth by having a dental done.
