Colour Conflict:
Changing Perspectives on Frenchie Coat Preferences

For fans of French Bulldogs, you've likely encountered terms like “No Fad Colours” or heard claims labeling breeders of nonstandard colours as “unethical,” “backyard breeders,” or “greeders.” The term "fad colour" suggests that these coat colours are merely trends that will fade away. However, reports indicate that blue French Bulldogs have existed since the early 19th century, suggesting these colours are here to stay.

It's important to recognize that unethical practices exist in every sector, including dog breeding. We shouldn't lump all nonstandard breeders into a single category, just as we shouldn't stereotype standard breeders. Poor breeding practices can be found in both groups, and it’s time to stop equating standard with quality. The media's portrayal of nonstandard colours by some standard breeders can be equally “unethical.” Currently, there is no substantial evidence linking nonstandard colour French Bulldogs to specific health issues.

Before I brought home my first Frenchie, a blue brindle, I encountered a lot of skepticism on social media. After conducting my own research, I found no credible support for health concerns associated with colour. I decided to go ahead and get my blue pup because I love the colour blue! Further research on tan points and merles confirmed that, provided responsible breeding practices are followed (especially avoiding merle-to-merle breeding), there’s no increase in genetic defects. With the growing popularity of nonstandard colours, any negative health impacts would have likely been observed within a generation or two.

When done responsibly, the introduction of new colours can enhance the genetic health of French Bulldogs by expanding the gene pool, allowing for better breeding choices. Instead of focusing solely on colour, we should prioritise structure—considering proportions, eye shape, nose type, and foot structure.

The colour of your dog does not influence its health or temperament; it merely affects the inheritance of colour genes. Claims that blues and merles face unique health challenges are not substantiated by responsible breeding practices. While any dog can have health issues, this is not inherently more common in nonstandard colours compared to standard ones. In my veterinary experience, I’ve observed a range of health problems across all colours, including respiratory issues in standard French Bulldogs. One observation worth noting is that white dogs, particularly Pit Bulls, seem to show more sensitivity to allergies, though this is anecdotal and not thoroughly researched.

A better approach to assessing health is to look at the parents. Always check the parents' health and structure, and ensure they don’t have common issues like breathing difficulties or allergies. A knowledgeable breeder who can confidently address your concerns is key. A simple conversation can reveal whether the breeder is genuinely passionate about the breed or merely in it for profit.

This topic is sensitive within the French Bulldog community, and I wish colour preferences were less contentious. The pressing issue we face is the overall health of the breed. Some countries are even considering banning brachycephalic breeds, including French Bulldogs, due to health concerns. Let’s work together to shift the narrative surrounding French Bulldogs by promoting the breeding of healthy pups.
