Lollie is THE most beautiful BIG fluffy boy. Sadly he has had some serious health issues recently.
Lollie is being treated for Urethral Spasm and Urethral mucoid plugs which makes it virtually impossible to have a wee. Just recently he had his third blockage in just over 2 months. When he arrived he was in agony and desperate to pass some wee, but he just couldn't get anything through his very sore urethra.
When he arrived he was immediately sedated and a urinary catheter was passed to unblock his urethra. It took a while with both a vet and a nurse working on him but we eventually got the catheter through and we were able to drain away all the urine from his bladder.
Sadly this time we found evidence of Struvite Crystals in his urine which means its become a little more serious. He is now only allowed to eat a specialised prescription diet - Hills C/D - so that no more crystals form in his bladder and cause even more problems.
Lollie stayed with us for around three days and after discharge we have been updated regularly of his progress. He is back to his normal self and all is well. Sadly he is no longer allowed to eat his favourite Pilchard snack at night so he is a little upset with us. ๐

Little Harley has grown up with Medivet as his GP vet. Recently he has had an increasing difficulty with his breathing, and it came to a head when it got hotter and he started to pant more.
We made the decision to refer Harley to see Dr Sarah Boyd and Dr Martin DeScally at Hilton Veterinary Hospital. They performed a CT scan and then took him straight into surgery to correct some of his problems...
Harley has done so so well following his surgery and is looking forward to much brighter future! Read more about his problems......
Harley has brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS). Brachycephalic airway syndrome refers to a particular set of upper airway abnormalities that affect brachycephalic (short nosed) dogs.
The upper airway abnormalities that occur in this syndrome include:
โก๏ธStenotic nares. Abnormally narrowed or small nostrils; the narrowing restricts the amount of air that can flow into the nostrils.
โก๏ธExtended nasopharyngeal turbinates- the ridges of bone in the nose that are covered by tissue that help humidify and warm air that is inhaled. When these extend past the nose into the pharynx (the area behind the nose and mouth), they cause variable amounts of airflow obstruction.
โก๏ธElongated soft palate that is too long for the length of the mouth; the excess length partially blocks the entrance to the trachea (windpipe) at the back of the throat.
โก๏ธLaryngeal collapse is caused by the chronic stress placed on the cartilage of the larynx by other features of this syndrome. Eventually, the larynx (voice box) is not able to open as wide as normal, causing further restriction in airflow.
โก๏ธEverted laryngeal saccules which are small sacs or pouches that are located just inside the larynx; these saccules turn outwards and are sucked into the airway by pressure associated with the increased respiratory effort caused by the stenotic nares and/or the elongated soft palate. Everted laryngeal saccules will further obstruct airwa
We try really hard to keep pets (and their owners - especially dads ๐๐) stress free. Odin has sadly had bad experiences with vets and he gets a little tense. But he loves us. He had his vaccinations, arthritis injection and then his mum asked us if we would attempt a nail trimโฆ. Well he had his nails done and would quite happily have had more done if he could. He loved his peanut butter and biscuits. What a champ- you are awesome Odin ๐พ๐พ๐พโฅ๏ธโฅ๏ธโฅ๏ธ
SADLY WE HAVE RUN OUT OF VACCINES AND DO NOT KNOW WHEN MORE WILL BECOME AVAILABLE!๐ข
As the Rabbit Viral Haemorrhagic Disease sweeps across South Africa we are urging bunny owners to get their bunnies vaccinated.
Currently the death toll is soaring and thousands of rabbits have succumbed to this virus, not only killing valuable breeding bloodlines and showlines, wild endangered rabbits and hares but also hundreds of pet rabbits too.
How can you protectyour bunny from this deadly disease?
VACCINATE your bunny. We know the vaccination is expensive but it can save your bunnies life.
Strict BIO SECURITY is vital. Quarantine your bunnies and separate them from other pets.
DISINFECT everything that may come into contact with your bunnies. Use F10 SCXD.
Try to PREVENT INSECTS entering your Bunnies area. Get Mosquito nets and start treating for fleas.
Ensure you have NO CONTACT with wild rabbits and hares and try not to go to places where there are Rabbits as you could carry the virus on yourself back to your rabbits.
The RHVD VIRUS is very resilient and can remain viable at room temperature for 105 days and can be transferred to your environment via hay, insects and other animals (although only rabbits are affected by the virus)
Secure hay that was harvested BEFORE the outbreak. @EQUITACKFEEDS has supplies of hay which they are keeping for Bunnies. Please give them a call on 031 768 1325.
RHVD is showing a 100% MORTALITY rate. ACT NOW to protect your bunnies!!!

Ava and Luna LOVE coming to see us. And today was no different even if they got vaccinations. Our treat jars are always full!! everyine deserves a reward for being brave!!
We absolutely adore this gorgeous dog! Diesel is a working dog in training, he is still quite young.
He is an incredibly well behaved dog, but he is his handler - Eric's problem child. You see Diesel always comes out second best in scraps between his siblings and we have stitched up more skin lacerations than we can actually remember.
Most recently he had a very nasty laceration on his knee that was stitched up at the local 24 hour emergency clinic. Sadly the wound broke open (With his help I am sure!!) and created a gaping messy infected wound.
Diesel was brought in to us and we operated on his leg for a second time. We cleaned, debrided (removed dead and damaged tissue) and stitched up the wound. All was going well until this last weekend when he got his Buster collar off at his kennels and ripped open his wound again!
Each time he does this he comes to stay with us (Much to our delight) for a few days. And each time when he goes home we see the excitement he has to see his beloved Handler - Eric. The love between these two is palpable. Eric is quite simply an amazing handler and clearly adores all his dogs. Eric is knowledgeable and a gifted dog trainer. We didn't capture Diesel coming out of the kennels to see Eric today but let's just say he gets very very excited!
Leave that wound alone Diesel!! Doctors Orders!!!

Dear old Harley who is a sweet and loving 15 year old cat came to visit us today with an ongoing ear problem. He was seen by another vet and diagnosed with a bacterial infection but his ears just were not getting better. His owner was also concerned as a few more of her cats were also starting to suffer with ear problems and nothing she was doing was helping them.
We had a look down his ears and they were certainly inflamed and very crusty. We took a sample and headed straight to the microscope to see what the problem was.
And we found the problem straight away ... Ear mites (Otodectes cynotis)
The ear mite lives on the skins surface in cats, dogs, rabbits, and ferrets. It is most commonly found in the ear canal but it can also live on the skin surface. Ear mites are very contagious, and pets become infested by direct contact with another infested pet.
Ear mites are a common cause of ear disease and infection, although other ear conditions may cause similar clinical signs. They are the second most common ectoparasite (external parasite) found on pets; the most common is the flea.
The symptoms of infestation vary in severity from one pet to another, and may include any of the following:
๐Ear irritation, leading to scratching at the ears or head shaking.
๐A dark waxy or crusty discharge from the ear.
๐Areas of hair loss resulting from self-trauma caused by the petโs scratching or excessive ear wax.
๐A crusted rash around or in the ear.
๐An aural hematoma (a large blood blister on the ear, caused by rupture of small blood vessels between the skin and cartilage); this occurs due to the pet scratching at their ears.
There are several ear medications licensed for the treatment of ear mites in pets. No medication can penetrate the eggs or pupae, so treatment is directed at killing the adult and larval forms.
Regular treatment with modern anti-parasitics like Bravecto or Nexguard will quickly get rid of these pesky mites :-)

We have to say a MASSIVE Thank you to Deborah, Kyle and Donovan from Pump and General Engineering ( https://elepon.co.za ) who have worked incredibly hard making our pond a beautiful home to our 30 Koi.
What initially started as a small job turned into a mammoth task.
It is wonderful being able to see our fish and know they are now in a beautiful and healthy environment. We cannot really thank you enough for what you have done for us.

When you are only 8 weeks old and your vet wants you to be admitted for observation after a nasty tummy issue.
Our MediVet team makes sure that everyone is well cared for. Just ask little Skye after she had a severe hookworm issue that caused a nasty haemorhhagic colitis. She was as happy as could be snuggling up with Colleen in the office!

Sometimes Deana and Kath have the BEST JOBS in the WORLD!!!
11 cute little plump six week old puppies came in to see us for their very first vaccinations and check ups. It is such a joy to be involved with pets all the way through their lives.
Puppies usually have a four part vaccine course starting with a basic Parvo and Distemper vaccination while still with their breeder at 6 weeks old.
After that pups have a course of three various vaccinations at 8 weeks, 12 weeks and 16 weeks old.
These vaccines are for the active immunisation of dogs against canine distemper, infectious canine hepatitis, canine parvo virus disease and canine parainfluenza virus infection.
The last two vaccinations also include Rabies which is so very important in South Africa.
Puppies that visit us for their vaccinations receive a full health check, advice about almost everything you need to know about raising your new bundle of joy as well as a helpful booklet that you can take home to use a s a reference guide.
Have a Wonderful Sunday!!
