The Herd at Iyadi The Herd Sanctuary
A Forever Home for injured, rescued and retired equines where living is on their terms

The Herd | Polo Pony Sanctuary offers a forever home to injured, rescued and retired polo ponies. Polo can be a very dangerous 'sport' for both pony and rider; the 'game' is very fast with immediate stops, starts and about turns as horse and rider are challenged to get the ball from the opposing side to score a goal

Most injuries are temporary and can be sorted with immediate care; others are no

t... it is when those 'other' injuries happen that The Herd | Polo Pony Sanctuary offers a forever home for the injured polo pony

The Herd | Polo Pony Sanctuary rely on partners who sponsor and donate funds towards the health, welfare, well-being, feed, grooming and daily care of all equines of The Herd; online sponsorship and donations are facilitated on The Herd | Polo Pony Sanctuary website www.thpps.com All funds are greatly appreciated, thank you

"This is 'Irma', she is one of the Muscovy ducks that hangs out in the ponds in front of, and behind our house in Plant City, Florida. About a month ago she laid 13 eggs at the base of the Live Oak tree in the front yard. She usually gets on and off the nest multiple times a day to eat and drink. When I got up this past Sunday morning Irma was on her nest. The weather was already turning nasty with high winds and rain. Towards evening as the hurricane was heading towards us, we had torrential rains and wind gusts up to 107mph! Irma hunkered down and never left her nest. We could watch her from our bathroom window as we were lucky and never lost power. When the eye of the hurricane was over our house, we went out to check on her and she was still sitting tight. After the eye passed the wind and rain kicked up again and we finally went to sleep around 2:00am. When we woke up Monday morning, there was Irma, still sitting on her nest, covered in broken tree branches and Spanish moss, but alive and unharmed, all 13 eggs still intact. Monday was still very windy, and Irma had yet to leave her nest, so we brought her food and water which she readily accepted. Today, Tuesday, she finally got up from her nest, stretched her legs and took a quick dip in the pond before heading back to her eggs. So, here's to Irma, super duck, who sat through a category 2-3 hurricane, protecting her eggs, and said 'not today hurricane Irma, not on my watch!' Looking forward to having 13 Muscovy ducklings soon, pooping all over our driveway."

On Wednesday the team at The Herd received an urgent request from animal rescuers in PE

Could we add a goose and 7 ducks to the 7 geese and 4 ducks they brought the week before

The dam is about a hectare in size with natural shelter for them to keep dry and plenty foraging..

All they needed was water to have a life-worth-living πŸ’•

URGENT FEED APPEAL
The Herd needs assistance with feed please; we do not ask often; but we have 4 horses in the special needs unit who need feeding - whatever you can help with is greatly appreciated.

If you can donate feed, they eat;
Golden years
Alfalfa chaff
Shandy chaff
Oaten chaff

They need this because they cannot graze very well, if at all.

The Herd of 17 horses have become 'self-sufficient'... they live on 23ha with 5 different types of grass which is freely available to them; they love to swim and play in the dam

Sipho shared with me today that if they do not get down to the field by 10am to groom them... The Herd refuse to be groomed.. it is their time; enjoy the space, give them treats, interact with pleasure; they love human company, but no grooming, not in their time :)

This is exactly how The Herd needs to be; they are learning to live life on their terms

I've learnt that horses who have a 'right-to-decide' and who decide to share their space and time with you; share moments of unequalled acceptance and pure joy.. its like time and space captured in the moment of acceptance and understanding.. mutual respect; another level!!

In fields they roam, so gentle and kind, A donkey's heart, pure and refined. With eyes that speak of wisdom deep, Their loving nature, ours to keep. They carry burdens, day by day, Yet never once do they betray A sense of care, a gentle touch, Their spirits strong, they give so much.In their presence, we find solace, A gentle, kind, and loving promise. On this day, let's honor and say, Donkeys dear, in our hearts, you'll stay. πŸ’• πŸ’• πŸ’•
