Leila, a jack russel with an allergy. Typical of a young mischieveous dog exploring everything. The Wheal(hives) is a swelling caused by histamine released from mast cells and the Flare is a red inflamed area, very itchy. Can develop within 10 to 15 minutes of coming into contact with the allergen......insect stings, pollens, food, medicines. In this case an allergex prevented the futher release of histamine and he was back to normal within 12 hours .

Wishing you all and your loved ones a Happy Easter. With all the chocolate in the house at this time of the year don't be tempted to spoil the dogs YES,chocolate is toxic to dogs. Approx 500gram of milk chocolate is poisonous to a 10 kg dog .The toxic chemical is Theobromine contained in the roasted seeds of the cocoa plant.the darker the chocolate the more toxin it contains. Symptoms that can occur about 6-12 hrs after ingestion... vomiting, diarrhoea.restlessness, and in severe cases seizures .If you catch your dog having eaten a slab of chocolate try and get him to vomit .A damp ball(golf ball size) of soap powder compressed and pushed down the back of his throat works well .Then dose with activated charcoal tabs to absorb any of the theobromine that may be in his intestine .If serious, seek veterinary advice .Google has many sites to check out .Have a wonderful easter. Training dogs for detection of Covid Virus.
Research is underway in France and Germany using dogs trained to detect Covid 19. Several research teams have demonstrated high levels of success in sensitivity and specificity of the K9 Covid test. The dog can smell the presence of specific Volatile Organic Compounds generated by the virus. Dogs can detect substances as low as 1 part per trillion. They are smelling exhaled air, sweat samples, urine, saliva or even masks worn by people. Success rates have varied from 76%-94%. The conclusion of the initial trials is that bio detection in dogs represents a robust diagnostic tool when correctly trained in the fight against Covid 19. They are efficient , non-invasive and much cheaper than any other tests. Such dogs have already been deployed and show their efficiency.

Winter is here and with it comes a common problem, Kennel Cough. I have seen quite a few cases recently. Kennel Cough is the name given to infectious bronchitis/infections trachea bronchitis in dogs. The case is either a virus or bacteria affecting the respiratory system causing a cough. The cough is strong, often with a honking sound. Also a runny nose, sneezing, lethargy, loss of appetite and a fever. Most infections resolve in 1-3weeks. It is highly contagious so dogs going to kennels must be vaccinated. The viral form (Parainfluenza) is included in the polyvalent annual vaccine (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus) The bacterial form requires a separate vaccine. It is not a fatal disease; it sounds worse than it is. However, puppies, old dogs and immune compromised dogs may develop a broncho-pneumonia so it is advisable to have a cough checked out.
